Nicolas walked along the shore of Long Island Sound, his service dog running freely in front of him. She lept across the sand, chasing after a tennis ball Nick had thrown. His hands were in his pocket as he looked at the sea, thinking about his boyfriend, Charlie, back in England. Ever since Nick had come to camp, he'd barely talked to Charlie. Seeing as it was dangerous to have technology, he had to use one of the camp phones to call him. And seeing as Charlie's mental state wasn't top tier... Well, it worried Nick. He let out a sigh as Nellie came back, dropping the ball at his feet.
Ember sat in the sand, her jean shorts and camp T-shirt rifling in the beach wind. She traced shapes in the sand, thinking about nothing. The waves acted like a noise cancelor, blocking the sounds around her. A dog came into her periferal. The dog was chasing a ball, and she could see someone in the distance, probably the dogs owner. Yup, the dog caught the ball and ran back to the person, dropping it at his feet.
Her long red hair suddenly slapped her face. Sighing she put it into a quick braid down her back.
Nellie's ears perked up, and she quickly darted in the direction of Ember. "Nellie!" Nick called out, watching as she bolted over to the redhead. He ran over and caught up to her quickly. Nellie had jumped up on Ember, giving her slobbery kisses on the face. "Nellie, get down-" Nick tugged at her collar gently. "Sorry about her, she's really sweet but can be a lot sometimes."
She heard a collar jingle. "Nellie!" was her only warning before the dog jumped onto her. "Ack!" she fell back onto the sand, laughing because the dog was licking her face "H-Hello" she managed to say. Someone grabbed the dog off of her. Sitting up she wiped her face. "No problem, She is really sweet, I don't mind" Ember said, not looking up from brushing her legs clean of sand, which the clumps of sand looked vaguely like paw prints.
Nick laughed, the corner of his mouth tipping up into its signature smile. He ran a hand through his hair as Nellie ran in circles. "Nellie, you gave the poor girl pawprints for life," he chuckled, rubbing her behind the ears. "I'm Nick, by the way."
Ember smiled at the dog, Nellie, and back up at Nick. "Its just sand" she shrugs, wiping it off of her legs. "See, all gone" she happily pets Nellie and stands up. "Im Ember, daughter of Demeter" Ember smiles, noticing an accent in his voice.
"Well, that's a relief," Nick said, his smile sticking. "Oh, right, I'm a son of Ares. Demeter, huh?" He asked, crossing his arms over his chest. Nellie had run off to the shore to chase some seagulls searching the sand.
Her eyebrow raised "Would not have guessed Ares. Apollo, maybe, not Ares" Ember admitted. "Yup Demeter, plants and stuff" she says. Looking toward where Nellie is playing in the sand, she says "Cute dog, haven't seen many mortal pets in a while. Howd you manage to convince them to let you keep her?"
Nick chuckled, "Everyone says that! I'm not mean or anything like stereotypical Ares kids, it's just because of my love for aggressive sports." Nick beamed. "Well, that sounds peaceful," he said, letting out a sigh. "Oh, yeah- She's a service dog. For anxiety," he said, teetering for a brief moment on his heels.
Ember smiled "I never said that. You just give off....apollo vibes. Sunny, and bright." She admitted. "Yeah, it can be fun sometimes. People always underestimate me, but they always are surprised. They always think plants cant do much. Have you ever been suspended upside down by a vine?" she asked him. "Oh, does she help a lot? That's a stupid question sorry" she mumbles
"I take it as a compliment, then, thank you." Nick shook his head then, "Safe to say I haven't, and I'm hoping I won't have to." Nick grinned, Nellie returning eventually. "It's not stupid, don't worry. I... Yeah, she does. Especially everything that's been going on, it's nice to have a friend who won't leave you. You know?"
"You're welcome," Ember said. "It's...not fun, blood gets to your head and you get all dizzy." She swirled her fingers around her head. "Fun to do it to other people though, funny watching them squirm." she chuckled a bit. "Everything that's been going on?" she cocked her head a bit. "Yeah, that's nice, comforting too. Does she sleep on your bed with you?" why was she asking such stupid questions?
"Ah, don't you just love that?" Nick joked, chuckling once more. "Oh, just things in England," he clarified, "It's nothing." He could practically feel the embarrassment and oversharing feeling crawling up his skin. "'Course she does, except she takes up the entire thing!" Nick let out a laugh, "Guilty as charged, right, Nel?"
Oh he's Enlgish she thought, finally recognizing the accent. "Youre from England?" Ember asked, "Dont know many people from outside the United States" she admits. "She needs her space. You cant expect her to share do you?" She jokes a bit. "Well I think shes innocent"
"Born and raised," he said proudly. "Surprisingly I've met a couple campers from Europe. Even one from Portugal," Nick said, reminding himself of the camper in the infirmary he'd met after falling off the climbing wall. Nick laughed now, "Okay, I see your point."
"Nice" Ember said, smiling a bit. Nick seemed nice, and was VERY friendly. So was Nellie, who was digging holes in the sand. "Seeee, shes a big girl." Ember chuckled "A big, dirty, girl" she said, pointing to the sandy dog.
"Yeah, she'll need a bath afterwards," Nick laughed, watching her paws and fur get coated in the wet sand. "So, since you know I'm from England, where are you from?"
"Thats the best part though, getting all clean and warm after the beach" Ember said, laughing with him. Nellie was so, so, SO dirty oh my god. "Maybe she needs 2, just in case...."
"Oh, um, I'm from Maryland, but I haven't been there in forever. Ive lived here for years" She did NOT want to remember Maryland. Ever. Ever.
”Definitely!” Nick smiled before sensing her discomfort. “We don’t need to talk about it. Honestly, I thought you were one of those “born and raised” New Yorkers. Guess I’ve got to work on my guessing,” he joked.
"Hm? Oh yeah, well you were close at least" She chuckled a bit, not knowing what to say or do. Why did she have to think about it? Shit. Now she's gonna spiral in front of someone she just met and it'll be not very good. Oh God, this is gonna be bad. For a brief second, she closed her eyes and took a (very slightly) shaky breath.
(Needed drama)
Nick went into auto-pilot, having dealt with this with his own boyfriend and even himself. “Ember? Are you alright?” He asked, hoping it wouldn’t come off in a prying tone.
Ember quickly ran a hand through her bright red hair, composing herself as quickly as she could. "Yeah, I'm fine, just....long day. Lots of....training" She internally cringed at her words. Not believable at all. Why would he care anyway? She was just overreacting to nothing. Nothing even happened. He just was asking about where she was from and....now shes here—freaking out.
”Hey, deep breaths.” He say next to her, “Talk to me about it,” Nick squeezed her hand gently, “I’m here.”
"About...my day?" she mumbled, staring off toward the sea, where nellie was being hilariously cute. "Um, Im just tired is all. Lots of...running." More internal cringing for no reason. She froze for a second when he squeezed her hand, before squeezing it back gently. Her breathing was less shaky, and she hadn't had any flashbacks....yet.
"You run?" Nick asked, brightening up. He usually ran twice a day, seeing that he usually went back to England for the school semesters and had to stay fit for rugby... Well, that and any monsters that desired to get in his way. "You know, it sounds like you need a break."
"Well, from anything and everything. Take a day for yourself and just... relax? Hang out by the beach all day. Go into the city," Nick spread his hands around him. "Whatever helps you out. For me, it's just a spending an entire day at home with my boyfriend," Nick smiled lightly. He missed Charlie so much; In fact, he already bought tickets to surprise Charlie to visit New York.
"That's why I came here, to the beach, In the first place" she picked up some sand into her hand, running it through her fingers. She had had a long day, this was just the cherry on top. "That seems nice, hanging out with a loved one. What's he like? Your boyfriend?" Ember asked, both curious and wanting to think of something else for a bit.
"That makes sense, yeah." He watched her scoop up the sand and let it slide through her fingers. "It's great... Charlie's the best. He's funny and sweet, plays the drums-- Oh my gods, you should see him during rugby! He's kinda small, but he can run like Hades." Nick hadn't realized he was gushing, a soft look in his eyes and his shoulder relaxing. "I don't know who I'd be without him."
"That's sweet" Her eyes didnt leave the ground, as she continued to play with the sand. Ember chuckled "Scrawny little man is he?" she said, glancing up at him, and he looked....in love. It was sweet. "It's great what someone you love can do to you, change you forever"
”Yes, he is,” Nick was quiet for a moment, the memories of what Charlie went through playing in his head. Nick nods, “When we’re done with school, I’m going to marry him.” He declared.
"Really?!?" she said, mildly surprised. Well, if you know you know right? "How long until then?" she asked, curious, "have a ring already?"
Nick nods, "Exactly." He teeters on his feet, "Um, yeah, actually." He rubbed the back of his neck. "He's a year younger, and I know it's stupid, but we'll last. I'm sure of it."
Ember smiled at him, he seemed really, really, happy right now. "Awww" she sucked in a breath, not meaning to say that. Hoping that he didn't hear it she continued "Im sure of it too, Charlie seems amazing"
”He is, thanks.” Nick says softly. “And you? Do you have someone here..?” He asks, scratching Nellie behind the ear.
Ember chuckled, looking back at the water, "...No actually, I don't. Maybe someday, hopefully. But not at the moment" She admits. Hopefully someday she had someone like Nick does Charlie. It would be beautiful.
”Someday, that’s for sure.” He chuckles. “I wasn’t even looking for love but you know, Charlie just showed up.”
