Daphne | 9 comments Hello. I am looking for recommendations in the fantasy genre with a romance subplot. I would prefer it to be adult fiction rather than YA, but I will accept YA recommendations if you think they are excellent books. I did not like ACOTAR and I do not have an interest in anything with gratuitous amounts of smut. I have no issue with sexual content, I'm just not looking for what are called "spicy" books at this time. To give you some idea of my tastes, I enjoy some classics, the Lord of The Rings series, and sci-fi fantasy. I like fascinating magic systems, strong world building, and gothic/dark themes. I enjoy horror elements as well. Concerning the romance subplot, I want to see two characters that are an excellent team. I want to watch them struggle through the story together towards victory. I also am interested in a romance between a protagonist and a reformed villain, but please (!) make sure that the villain has not done something so heinous that they cannot reasonably be reformed! No previous genocides on the application, please, I beg you.

This is long winded, I understand, but this is my first foray into asking a forum for recommendations. Your kindness and help is appreciated. Please understand that not everything I noted has to be met in the same book. These are just themes/concepts that I enjoy and would like to see. If you think you have something that may not precisely fit what my tastes are, but is adjacent to them, I would love to look into it!

Thank you very much!

✨sofia✨ | 666 comments Pretty much sums of Throne of Glass!! It is YA in the first 3-4 books, but goes towards new adult with an epic ending. It is written by the same author as acotar though, so be wary if you had a problem with her writing style.

Some other recommendations:
Spark of the Everflame (ya/na)
The Serpent and the Wings of Night (na/a)
Fourth Wing (na)
Crescent City (na/a)
Kingdom of the Wicked (na)

Hope this helps. Happy reading love <3

Raya (rayasthoughts) | 31 comments YA, but Bonesmith! I'm going to read Ghostsmith, the second book, and I think the romance might be more prevalent there, but in Bonesmith it's certainly just an undercurrent. It's a slow burn, where two enemies have to work together as a team (they certainly struggle) It's more paranormal than gothic, but there's good action. I think it'll be worth your while! Though I found the beginning to be too info-dumpy, it gets exponentially better and is SO worth it. The characters are fun too

Scout (shouta aizawa’s version) ੈ✩‧₊˚ | 781 comments fourth wing fits most of these, but it does have some spice (it wasn’t that much in my opinion tho). The invisible life of addie larue is also great, but the romance subplot doesnt really come until the second half of the book. i also totally recommend the cruel prince and powerless.

I've heard good things about both of these and they're on my tbr. Thank you!

Tahls | 50 comments The Shepherd King Duology - YA, gothic vibes, with a unique magic system and a sprinkle of romance

The Priory of The Orange Tree - Adult, not gothic but has a Game of Thrones feel to the location/structures, very strong world-building with ancient magic, unexpected romantic connection, and teamwork between foes for a greater purpose

The Book That Wouldn't Burn Trilogy (2 out of 3 currently out) - Adult, immersive world-building, very fascinating magic system, and romance/teamwork between conflicting characters for a greater purpose

The romance in all of these are subplots with no smut

I keep hearing good things about Throne of Glass. I admittedly am a little wary of Maas, but I do believe in second chances. I appreciate you going out of your way to treat me with a whole list of recs! Thank you!

I hope you know that you ate down with this rec. Bonesmith seems absolutely perfect for me and I'm very excited to read it!

Fourth Wing is not for me, but The Invisible Life of Addie Larue is already on my tbr and I'm very excited for it! I hear good things about the Cruel Prince and Powerless so I'll probably be checking those out. Thanks so much!

Soft Nectarine ~ | 487 comments Romantasy is my favorite subgenre! Here are some of my favorites 🙌 they all have a varied degree of sexy scenes so I can’t guarantee a completely clean plot.

A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle Jensen (Norse mythology, only one book is out so far)

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig (unique magic system/duology, gothic and spooky)

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness (vampires, witches, demons)

Married to Magic series by Elisa Kova (5 standalone with unique magical systems)

The Spellshop by Sarah B. Durst (cozy cottage core romantasy, clean romance but not much plot)

The Winter King by C.L.Wilson (probably closest to ACOTAR)

When the Moon Hathed by Sarah A. Parker (fast paced romantasy with dragon lore)

Artemis~Ebonie (Inactive) | 85 comments It's YA but the Skyward series by Brandon Sanderson is a dystopian science fiction type series. The world is amazingly well thought out and there's a romance side plot between the main character and another boy at the flight school with her. It's not quite enemies to lovers, more like academic rivals, but I loved it.

Raya (rayasthoughts) | 31 comments @Daphne I'm so excited to see what you think (I have nobody who's read it yet and the main characters' relationship have become my new obsession😫)! Mind if I add you as a friend so I won't forget to check out your updates (whenever you read it, obv :))?

Rivals to lovers can be better than enemies to lovers in my opinion, so its a win for me! Thanks for the recommendation :)

I would love to be book friends with you! You are absolutely free to add me. It would be great to have someone to discuss that book with, especially since you seem to love it so much :D

One Dark Window Duology! Also I recommend Heartless Hunter.

Jenifer | 33 comments I've seen several people mention The Shepherd King series... I will also second this-such a good duology! The same goes for The Folk of the Air series! Highly, HIGHLY recommend those books.

You might like Chimeras of Estmer. This book definitely has a complex plot, great world-building and a very interesting magic system. There are definitely elements of horror, as there is a villain (his name is Lord Siwald) who sews people together with animals in his castle and then creates a great army from these horrible chimeras.
As for romantic subplots, there are three in this book. And in all three, the girl and the guy become allies, then friends, and finally fall in love. So it's very much in line with your wishes that they should be a great team and that they should fight through the story to victory together.
Also, in one case, the female protagonist falls in love with a reformed villain. Specifically, the servant of the main villain, who turns to the good side and then fights his former boss with his girlfriend.
I'll probably think of other books, but Chimeras of Estmer has become one of my favourites since I read it this summer, and I can't shut up about it. Besides, you might like it too. Sounds like we have very similar tastes in books.

Vivienne | 8 comments Powerless!!
if you haven’t read i highly recommend. it has an enemies to lovers trope (one of my personal favorites) and has no spice. i would say that maybe its slightly more of a romance with a subplot of fantasy but its hard to tell. i recommend either way!!

message 22: by Priya (new)

Priya | 14 comments Hi! I would really recommend the Mirror Visitor series. It is a 4 book series, and the romance isn't really a huge part, but there definitely is some. It is an adult fantasy, and it gives off steampunk vibes in the last two books, and gothic/historical in the first two books. There is no smut in it, and the ml was seen as sort of an antagonist, or at least a cruel man by the fml in the first book. It's one of my favorite romantasy book series. I hope you check it out! Happy reading :)

Scout (shouta aizawa’s version) ੈ✩‧₊˚ | 781 comments an ember jn the ashes - sabaa tahir

powerless - lauren roberts

Tasha | 318 comments Strongly recommend An Ember In The Ashes. I’m like halfway through the second book, but there isn’t any spice, sub plot romance, interesting world and characters

Layla (laylamystic) | 2 comments Throne of glass
Romance is secondary to the plot but it's also written so beautifully. World building is amazing and I loved every single character. It's by far one of the series I feel the strongest bond to and the one I loved to most.
The cruel prince was also amazing.
I heard about Daughter of no world and am planning on reading it soon, but I think it fits the description.
Also The invisible life of Addie LaRue, loved it!
