Sarah-Vanessa | 493 comments A question: can I read this without having read volume 1? For what I see this is the second one in a series.

I've read both 1 and 2. It may be possible. The second one has it's own mystery that is wrapped up within the book. However, you would be missing a bit of backstory on the two main characters which may cause confusion.

@Jen K Thank you for your quick Answer. Alright, I might Jump in later then.

Brianna C | 1248 comments I’m on a road trip for the duration of this trip (great planning I know lol) but I will do my best to post updates and such!

through end of chapter 6:
I was a bit worried I wouldn’t remember much from the first book and struggle to get back into this world. Thankfully I’ve been able to get back into things pretty easily despite not remembering much! I am intrigued by this new mystery and currently don’t have many theories as to what I think could have happened. Some of the names in here are super unique and I have absolutely no clue how to pronounce so just making things up in my brain lol.

Brianna C | 1248 comments through end of chapter 12:
Getting more pieces to the puzzle and am now intrigued by Stoker’s brothers showing up in various ways. Also this grotto - they mention no one had opened the gate for awhile but there were clearly people on the list within the past year. It’ll be interesting to see how things come together!

Brianna C | 1248 comments through end of chapter 17:
I am honestly surprised by how many people we have met who have been fairly open minded in regards to the sexual choices and such - you typically associate this time frame with a vibe of prudeness. I currently still have no hard theories about who did it or why.

Katie (love---katie) | 576 comments I am only on like Chapter 5 or 6 so I haven't actually read any of your thoughts yet, just scrolled right past lol. I did forget some of the finer points from Book 1 (which I knew I would, because I distinctly remember zoning out for a decent portion of the audiobook), but I think I'm following along okay. Enjoying myself so far! Veronica is not just a character, but A Character. And I love her. Top priority this evening is to make some decent progress. Read about 10% just while waiting in line to vote today! Haha

She definitely has main character energy but in a good way! There are some good moments in chapters 18-23 so excited to see what you think! I will probably be able to finish tonight but I will use spoiler tag for ya!

Sarah-Vanessa | 493 comments @Katie , @Brianna ughh, I‘m so behind on this one. Hopefully I will finish tomorrow or Friday.
At the Moment I‘m at chapter 6. And I totally agree Veronica is A Character. I absolutely love her! So definitely agreeing with both of you.

No worries!

Katie (love---katie) | 576 comments Okay I finished! Not sure on my rating quite yet. I thought the characters and setting were fun--bohemian artists, royals, and the combination of them that got into scandalous behavior even by modern standards, let alone the time the book is set in. However, I thought the actual mystery was quite dull. When it came down to the whodunnit, (view spoiler)

I thought Lady Wellie was really fun, I'd like to see her come back. (view spoiler)

Sarah-Vanessa | 493 comments @Katie I 100% agree with you!

Finished it today and it‘s a solid 3 stars. If it wouldn’t be for the outstanding characters of Veronica and Stoker and their unique dynamic of bickering and flirting, and of course Lady Wellingtonia it would be a 2 star.

The mystery isn‘t the most exciting, it‘s really slow paced and not a lot of action/suspense is happening. There are some entertaining situations and moments though, for example in the opium den. And I loved how indirectly open sex was discussed and expressed, considering the time the story plays.

I have to say I struggled a lot getting into the writing style, especially the language used, as a non native English speaking person. But I will probably read the other books as well, as overall it was a fun read.

Brianna C | 1248 comments @Sarah-Vanessa & Katie - I agree the highlight was the characters and the mystery itself was fairly predictable. I didn't quite expect how the mystery ended but still enjoyed it overall! I agree about the very open conversations about sex being a somewhat surprise given the time frame of the story but it certainly made it feel a bit more modern. I'm excited for the next one but primarily around the slow burn with Stoker and Veronica.

Sarah-Vanessa | 493 comments @Brianna Totally! Definitely want to read the third book just for that slow burn….
