The main character is a kid who likes comics or drawing comics and his comic drawing teacher guy is with him when the mall is suddenly launched into space. Aliens have taken over and announce that everything in the mall is now free. Everyone starts grabbing TV's and stuff. People camp out in the stores of the mall. Pretty light hearted and short. I don't remember the ending

I found it it's called "Space Mall" by Susan Schade. It's a Stepping Stone book
