In this second book in A Series of Unfortunate Events, the three Beaudelaire siblings find themselves living with another distant relative, Montgomery Montgomery, whom they call “Uncle Monty,” a herpetologist. Count Olaf is still after their money. The opening again warns readers that this will not be a happy story, and it turns out to be even darker than the first book. The kids work together to thwart the villain, but they find it hard to catch a break. It is oriented towards younger children and continues to provide definitions (within the story) for words they may not understand. I had just listened to the first book, The Bad Beginning, and enjoyed Tim Curry and the cast’s narration so much that I decided to pick up the second. This one is also narrated by Tim Curry, who does an excellent job, but does not continue the full cast. I can see why children enjoy these books.
