NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11090 comments I seem to be finding several books this month about girls or young women with mathematical or technical abilities, who push against Victorian constraints. I wish I had books like this when I was young. This book has a very Dickensian feel, with echoes of Oliver Twist, but it is an alternate history in which the imperialists are colonizing other planets rather than countries. Diana was born into a rich family and dreams of going into space. But after her parents die, she ends up living on the streets, as a gutter rat and pickpocket. She disguised herself as a boy named Diver, and uses her spatial awareness skills to spot the best ways to find a mark and never get caught. After being threatened by a gang, she and her friend Tipper find a way to tunnel into the well guarded space station nearby. Her physics ability enables her to spot a pending disaster, and this opens up a whole new world of opportunities (and dangers) to her. The story is a nice mix of friendship, adventure, tech, intrigue, scoundrels and romance.
