↬ leila is, has been and always will be a stubborn asshole. yeah you heard what i said. making leila change her mind is like making a husky not run around and bark like a maniac. impossible (unless the husky is impaired or injured in which case we formally apologize for any offense caused towards you or your husky). but underneath her tough and gruff exterior, leila is a soul with a heart of gold. she's fiercely loyal and loyally fierce...that sounded a lot better in my head. but anyway, the point still stands. leila would do anything for the people she cares about. of course that doesn't mean she isn't without her flaws. she can be extremely petty and hold grudges, but it's pretty rare for her to not just, roll her eyes, blow a breath, say "whatever" and go on with her day. she can be pretty unshakeable so to really get to her head is...some sort of achievement.
↬ she's a skilled fighter. despite being mostly recognized for her art, leila dedicates hours each day to train and practice. she's most skilled with blades, preferring to fight with a bo-staff or dual wielded scimitars (a gift from hephaestus to honor her hindu heritage), and has almost perfected her swordsmanship. unfortunately, her archery leaves a lot to improved, which is really sad, because archery is fucking hot (the control is just *sweats*)
↬ leila was born to a pretty poor family. they worked hard to make a living and some days they really couldn't. while they weren't particularly poor by most standards, they certainly weren't well-off either. of course, life may had been easier had their [REDACTED] of step-father not left them behind for some [REDACTED] [REDACTED] the [REDACTED] son of [REDACTED] that he was. leila, her mom and little brother and little sister always pushed themselves to the very brink of exhaustion to scrounge up enough to live on
↬ leila's mother, was a mechanic, and damn good at her job. maybe that was what drew hephaestus to her in the first place. female mechanics aren't a common sight, especially not those practically reeking of godly power, so when hephaestus first located neeyat, working her rundown mechanic shop, he couldn't help but to offer some assistance, just to clean it up a bit. neeyat, having the same, stubborn arrogance as her daughter, refused at first. why would she accept the help of an absolute stranger? but after a while, she finally gave in. per the sake of keeping it pg, we shall not go into much more detail, but eventually, hephaestus did confess his true identity (just to, you know, make sure he wasn't banging his own daughter or anything), and in turn, neeyat told him about her own heritage, as a descendant of adi-parashakti, the hindu goddess. lo and behold; leila was born.
↬ of course hephaestus couldn't stay forever, and so he returned to olympus, and neeyat married another man, of which she had two children with; aryan and nour. then the man turned out to an absolute abusive dickhead who cheated on neeyat, took away most of her money and ran away with his mistress. whoo!
↬ leila's first monster attack happened when she was five. it wasn't a very strong monster, and neeyat was able to protect her daughter. her second happened not long after, then followed by the third, and a fourth. apparently, a part olympian and part primordial child had an unfortunately strong scent that even a smelly gabe 2.0 couldn't hide, but neeyat was trained, she could protect her children, as long as she was nearby. the real problem happened when she wasn't. at thirteen years old, leila remained blissfully unaware of her own powers, but one evening when she was out on a walk, she encountered her first monster on her own. or really, her first pack of monsters. obviously not sure what to do, leila ran. she ran, and she ran and she ran. train rides, bus rides, whatever it took to escape the creatures stalking her. after over a month of travelling, leila somehow guided herself all the way to long beach. it was as if something was pulling her in that direction and she followed, until she finally ended up at camp half-blood, a safe haven for demigods. demigods, like her.
↬ when she arrived, she was given access to speak with her mother (who, in tears, swore to beat her daughter to a pulp the next time she saw her as retribution for all the worry she had caused) and the truth about who she actually was and where she belonged. hephaestus didn't claim her immedietely. in fact, it took him a whole three weeks to claim his very upset spawn, and leila has always resented him a little for letting her mother suffer like that when he could have easily made a better life for her and her family. MISCELLANEOUS

pretty. a word nakiah has heard nearly every single day since she first came to camp half-blood, pulling herself up the shore of long island sound and walking unsteadily towards the camp. she's pretty. but it was not always like that.

nakiah grew up in the middle of the atlantic ocean, surrounded by gorgeous if conceited nereids. they were an entangled family of chaos and jealousy, names with too many vowels and clothes with too many pearls. it was the only home she had ever known, but even as a young child nakiah knew she was not the same as her sisters. she did not have the sharp-tipped ears and their webbed fingers, nor did she have their seemingly glowing skin. in many ways, nakiah was plain. too plain too fit in. with her rounded ears, and the little spots that would spatter across her face in the sun ( freckles she was later told ). breathing underwater was a conscious thought not something that just happened. she was simply different and it bothered her to her very making.

as she grew older, nakiah's differences started to become more, and more apparent. while the other nereids of her age began to grow claws and their teeth sharpened to fangs, she only became softer. instead of becoming bony and devastatingly gorgeous, nakiah retained her baby fat, her hips seemed to fill out, not thin, and she started to face the teasing from the girls around her.

it wasn't meant to be spiteful, nakiah knew that. she was different, she was odd, they were just pointing that out and she likely would do the same if she had been in their position, but that didn't stop it from hurting. it didn't stop nakiah from throwing out her meal and saying she eaten. it didn't stop her from going to bed hungry, day after day and night after night. it didn't stop her from poking at her stomach and pinching at her waist. but no matter what she did, nakiah only felt like a stranger inside her own body.

it was not until she was fifteen years of age that she was finally sat down by older nereids who explained to her that nakiah was not one of them. her mother was a nereid, that was for certain ( although they refused to tell her which of the fifty daughters of nereus she was ) but her father, he was human.

to say she was shocked would be an understatement. she had been instilled from her childhood the very core belief that all humans were evil. possessed by greed. nymphs were tricky, yes, mischievous, sure, but they were never purposely cruel or malicious, not like humans. humans were greedy and vile and hurtful but nakiah wasn't any of those things right?

when nakiah was presented the choice to either stay at home, with the nereid, or move towards the human lands to find her other kind, the choice should have been easy. stay with the nereids, of course, that was her home, it was where she belonged and most of all, it was all she had ever known.

but that the decision wasn't as easy as she thought, and nakiah found herself hesitating at the choice. she knew she didn't belong, they knew she didn't belong there, and the prospect of a place where she could finally be at ease was enticing to say the least and in the end she gave in to hope. hope of a better place. hope of a place belonged.

the next month or so was spent traveling up to long island sound where she stayed with a group of naiads who showed nakiah around while she learned how to walk. it was silly really, but she had never walked before. since she lived in an ocean, there was new real use of it. of course, she had hovered above land at the bottom of the sea, but as she learned, gravity was very different above and below water.

once nakiah finally gained some control over her limb, she finally dragged herself up the beach, repressing a shiver at the cool air pricking at her drenched clothes, tripping and stumbling her way all the way up the hill to camp half blood.

if a place where she blended in was what nakiah was looking for, she didn't find it. she was claimed almost instantly by amphritite, but the intial shock and surprise of being the daughter of poseidon's nereid wife, the queen of oceans was nothing compared to the wariness of being noticed for her peculiarities. it took nakiah a while to become familiar with human customs, and still then she was uncomfortable with many of their habits ( for one, why did humans pee so much? ).

one of the most tiring habits that many of the demigods had, was gawking. it was an awkward action. they did not speak, they did not move, they simply stared and it reminded nakiah an awful lot of watching a teacher grade your work in front of you.

if wasn’t until a few fateful months later when nakiah heard a few people her age gossiping and pointing at her during lunch, being an awful bit louder than they thought they were, did she finally. they thought she pretty. it was a compliment yet it brought her no joy. ( if only she thought ruefully if only you knew ).

her entire life, nakiah had assumed herself to be less than beautiful, and she had craved the looks she received now, but after spending such little time with human-folk her own people, she had grown fond of the charm in a crooked grin and the endearing quality of unequal dimples and once again, nakiah fretted that she was too odd to belong if for the opposite reason. she fretted that she was too bony and too pointy. that her teeth were too sharp and her limbs were too long.

and the cycle repeats.

it wasn't until after a difficult break up that nakiah truly realized how insecure and selfish she was, and how much she had to work on herself. she didn't have many friends, but with the few people who were there to support her, nakiah finally learned to grow and flourish. of course, she is not perfect, she doubts she ever will be, and there are many times she finds herself reverting to her old habits, especially around a certain someone-so, but she tries, and that is all she can do.

despite ageing out of the normal year-round camp, nakiah decided to stay at chb. she could not enter the human world, there were some oddities that even the mist couldn't hide, and she found that she still loved the nereids, but they no longer felt like home, so instead she started working at the stables, and in her free time nakiah enjoys studying fashion and textile design ( often underwater ).

nakiah loved sollian. she really did. with every fibre pf her being she was practically entranced by him. by the way he laughed and made her laugh, by the way he smiled and made her smile. he was brilliant, so wondrous, so effortlessly human and gods above and below he took her breath away. nakiah had never known love before she had meant him. neither had she known heartbreak.

to say that nakiah fell in love at at first sight would be a lie, but it wasn't as if it took her much to time to find her smiling like an idiot at every little thing. he was just so perfectly imperfect and she could hardly understand how there wasn't a gaggle of girls following him around everywhere because did she mention he was brilliant?

when they started dating, nakiah was over the moon. she never, in a thousand years could have believed that a nereid like her could have a chance with a beautiful stunning breathtaking guy like him, and, well, let's just say it showed.

she didn't mean to project her flaws or fears, she didn't mean to accuse him of not wanting to spend time with her. they rarely saw each other, and when they did, nakiah was too busy whining and complaining to ever understand why he spent so much time at his job. nakiah loved sollian, but often times she couldn't help but wonder if he truly loved her back. why would he anyway? why would anyone? who could ever love her?

looking back years later and thinking about her younger self, nakiah finds it very difficult not to cringe in embarrassment. in the end she was right, who would love her if she was such a fragile insecure doll who couldn't handle the slightest difficulty? but still, what she regrets the most is messing up could have been a serious relationship, because for all she is bitter over their breakup, nakiah can't help that one part of herself that somehow seems to love sollian anyway.

those are the values have been drilled into keirani since long before she could even speak. her entire life is simply a means to measure to keep her family in rule over the paladin lands, but if that what it takes to make her parents proud of her, her people scared of her, and her name engraved in history, she will bar no holds.

truly her parents' daughter, keirani was born to her enigmatic mother, and trained in her father's merciless tendencies, which has carved her character from the inside out. she does not take shit and it is considered well known that if keira were to take her father's place, she would rule reasonably but sternly, with an iron fist and a bloody soul.

while she may not be a water shifter like the majority of her family, keirani's dragon was just as awe-inspiring. she manifested when she only nine years old and her true form could almost be described a chaotic version of air dragon, uncontrollable and wild. a storm dragon. rani may not have an ancient watching her back and might not have been gifted incredible power, but at least she was rare, right?

unfortunately so. what should have been keirani's greatest strength instead became her greatest weakness. the dragon was too much for her, she could hardly fly properly without zipping aimlessly through the air, let alone control her other abilities. in the end, the destruction she left behind was far greater than the good she could do with it, and rani became incredibly averse to shifting

instead she focused on what she could control. keirani made it her mission to excel in everything she could. she put all her effort into her studies, her training, her duties. keira poured her whole heart and self into everything she did. if she could not be better than in her siblings in raw strength, she would beat them in everything else. even if calix was set to receive the crown, keira set out to prove that she was just as worthy as him if not more.

that is what makes up keirani, the very core of her being which makes her such a brilliant mess. emotion does not come easy for her, not with the walls she has built up around her heart, but she is glad it is that way. she is no peasant who has time for frivolous feelings. she had a responsiblity, to her family, to her kingdom, and to herself, and if she cannot live up to it than may her soul never rest.

but of course, keirani is not without her undoings that taint her very being. when she was younger, keirani had been somewhat of a hopeless romantic, as much as it disgusts her to think of it now, and had foolishly given her heart away to the one man who least deserved it.

despite being quite a few years older, bodhi had seemed so kind and sweet and generous and rani had never known these things. he was always so open and affectionate with her and for a touch starved teenager like herself, it was new sort of heaven. within a few months, keirani was convinced they were mates ( how could anyone make her feel this way if they weren't meant to be? ) and would make plans with him to enter the trails together when once she turned twenty.

to her utter disappointment, bodhi had responded with a gut wrenching disgust and it was then that he revealed that he had never had any true interest in her. she was just a tool to get close to get close to the alpha king so that he could challenge him, and maybe have a little bit of fun on the side. he hadn't actually cared.

his words had filled rani with such fury she could hardly breathe. it was an ugly, twisted rage that left bitter laugh-sobs in the back of her throat and her hands fisted at her sides. for the first time in her life, she understood her father and brother's bloodlust, the urge to destroy and kill and have no mercy because if the world was this cruel she had every right to be just as cruel back. but when she called on her dragon, somewhere between her inability to think clearly and her lack of practice, she simply couldn't.

the girl that bodhi had left in the forest, tear-streaken face and arms wrapped around the waist was not the girl who walked back into the palace, head held high and face impassive as she glanced down the bloody wrangled body of a man she had cared so much for only hours ago. keirani never found out how he died. she never asked either.

merciless. ruthless. faultless.

this is what keirani has become, how she rose from the ashes of her failings and mistakes that she swore to never make again like a phoenix reborn. reflecting on her previous decisions, she cannot help but to scowl. she had once been an innocent naive girl and heavens forbid if she would ever let herself be used like that once more.

keirani is well aware that her relationship with her family has never been the same since, pity is not an expression she wishes to see from her callous father again, but she does not care. she may have lost their trust before but she will make up for it a thousand times if she has to. she will prove to each and every paladin and arrivan alike that she is no longer the tame, docile girl she was before.

part of rani almost laments the death of bodhi, because if only she had been the one to kill him, to leave him until he came crawling back to her and to show him oh how the tables had turned because she is the one pulling the strings now, the one playing with others until she gets bored or until they are no longer worth her time. where she was once the puppet, she has become the puppeteer. she has no care in the world other than what is of use to her.

if the world was a circus she would whatever it took to become the damn ringmaster.

ambition. resolve. tenacity.

these are the traits that drove keirani to where she is now. ever cold and calculating, she still plots for power, albeit she works twice as hard has become only a thousand times more loyal to her family. after bodhi, keira realized what genuinely mattered and who actually stood by her. no matter how much she would but heads with them, her family, her blood had her evermost unending loyalty and she would see to it that it stayed that way.

however, after everything that happaned, keirani has become incredibly reluctant about 'love' and 'mates'. while she would never say it, especially not to her parents, but keira's starting to wonder if it was a whole lot of bull. she was able to skip the first year of her trial eligibility by claiming that she had just turned twenty and she was practically still nineteen, and the second year as well by forcing so much work onto herself until she was practically drowning it, and saying that she couldn't possibly attend then.

but she is twenty-two, and to her utter distaste, rani has run out of excuses and it seems she might just have to search for a true mate after all. whether she will end up falling in love or committing unbased homicide is . . . yet to be seen.

being a demigod is no blessing, and sahira knows that better than many.

her life began with the remnants of a lie. her mother, once davout and prideful was ruined by a pregnancy she had never asked for. athena had met her but once, and granted her a child as a "gift," but no claims of false gods her family did not believe in would save her from the rumors.

the modern world did not believe in mysterious conceptions or divine intervention. no, they believed in scandal. in deceit. in betrayal. and so her mother became the woman who cheated on her fiance, and had the audacity to deny it.

she never forgave sahira for that.

sahira's father was not a bad man. he had once been equally devoted to his wife, if not through love than through his vows.

if she had been unfaithful he would've understood, and if she had lied then he could've hated her, but instead she clung to her story and the disbelief turned slowly to bitterness, the kind of bitterness that seeps into your bones and never leaves.

her mother fought it first, pleaded for belief, but the world did not take kindly to impossible things, and eventually she stopped resisting. she let people paint her as the believed.

she would become the woman they expected her to be—cold, strict, unrelenting. and if her daughter had to suffer for it, then so be it.

growing up, sahira never knew softness. love was something earned, not something given freely. love was there, in fleeting glimpses when her mother smoothed down her hair after a long day or her father squeezed her shoulder when he wasn't drowning in another bottle.

but it was never unconditional. it came with expectations, under the threat that it could be taken away just as easily.

sahira learned to survive them both. she learned to measure love, to earn it through obedience, to chase it with every fiber of her being. when her father told her she was ungrateful, she worked harder. when her mother struck her, she swallowed the pain and said nothing.

so she worked for their approval. she did everything right. she was obedient. she was quiet. she was perfect.

because if she was good enough, if she was perfect enough, then maybe, just maybe, they would love her the way she wanted them to. and for a while, she believed they did. but even perfection never seemed to be enough.

it hadn't been a punishment, not really. they hadn’t done it to be cruel—at least, that’s what she told herself. it was just how they were. she had been late coming home. the door was locked. she knocked. no answer. she knocked again. still nothing.

they would let her in eventually. they always did.

she sat on the steps, knees tucked to her chest, staring out into the dark. the neighborhood was quiet, but the night was not. there were things in the shadows, things that watched, things that waited.

the monster came with the smell of rot and death, with claws that scraped against pavement and glowing eyes that locked onto her like she was prey. sahira had never felt fear like that before, not even when her mother brought the burning metal to her hands or her father shattered another glass against the wall.

sahira turned slowly, heart hammering in her chest. she had never felt her body freeze in place while her mind screamed at her to move, to run, to do anything but stand there and wait to die.

the monster was more shadow than flesh, all jagged edges and gnashing teeth, and she was nothing but a helpless girl with nowhere to run.

it was the first time she had ever seen a monster. And it would have been the last if not for the satyr.

a satyr. a protector. a pulled her from death’s jaws and carried her away before she could even scream. he spoke words she barely understood—demigod, danger, camp—but all she could think about was how he had come for her.

if her parents had the chance, would they have?

the satyr brought her to camp half-blood, to a safe haven, to a world that made even less sense than the one she had left behind. but at least here, the rules were clear. monsters were monsters. gods were gods. everyone else was caught in the cross fire. and Sahira, for the first time in her life, was not alone.

camp half-blood became her refuge. the moment she understood where she was, she knew she would never return home. it was a selfish thought, an ungrateful thought, an unforgivable thought—but it was her own. for the first time, she was allowed to exist for herself. she trained. she studied. she became someone worth something.

she stayed at camp for five years straight. never went home although she did call her parents every few months, pretending they didn't seem happier without her around. but she never let herself believe she was free. because no matter how far she ran, the past had sharp teeth, and it always knew where to bite.

it was why, when she turned eighteen, she didn’t stay. she left camp, and attended upenn, tried to build something beyond the land of gods and monsters, clawing her way through sleepless nights and gritted teeth, proving herself in a world that didn’t know or care about the battles she fought.

and yet, she came back.

maybe she had never really left. maybe some part of her always knew that camp half-blood was the only home she had ever truly had.

now she's a counselor, guiding her own half-siblings who stumble into camp the same way she did—lost, confused, desperate. she is not soft or kind, but she is there and sometimes that is enough.

she tells herself she has moved on. she tells herself she doesn’t need love. that it is a weakness, a fragile thing that can be taken away. but still, somehow she aches for it, for something real, for something that does not come with conditions.

at night, when the campfire burns low and the world is quiet, she still dreams of locked doors and shadows with claws. and in the morning, she wakes. and she fights. and she survives.
