Jessica, their team is complete, so you'll have to be with another.

For the task: 'Read a book about someone starting at a new school', can it be a teacher starting a job in a new school?

I don't see a thread for Q&A, should we ask our questions here or in our own thread? Thanks!

Ashley,

For the task: Read a book set on New Year's Day. This is a pretty specific day. Can the book just be centered around that day? Like a person was born on the day and the whole book is centered around the bad luck of her birthday? However, the book spans more than that day.

Would you accept Contemporary for Contemporary Fiction? Or if it says Contemporary Romance, etc, would that count? I have several saying contemporary but not all say contemporary fiction, but as long as it's a fiction book...?

Seconding this question and also adding to it a bit.... I have a book set around New Year's Eve, then I'm assuming the next day will happen in the book since it's a mystery. The whole "start" is a New year's eve party

I am curious about this too - looking at Rules of Civility which has a NYE start, then more.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 913 comments Ashley, I know the rules are 10 max per member, but for the teams put together where some members are not at 10 each, can the others carry it to make 50 books a month if needed? Otherwise all the teams set up now that have 5 team members set up for 10 each will be guaranteed top placements. Bonuses won't be able to make up the difference when the team member number of books varies too widely.

I'll start a thread for Q&A, I just haven't gotten to it yet.

I will accept your variation, as the "new" part applies and it's a school

It definitely doesn't have to be set ONLY on that day. New Year's Day just needs to be included... maybe they attend a party, etc.

Diversity only counts if it's a book by an author from an underrepresented group or a book translated from another language.

Dear Team Members,
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback and enthusiasm for the reading challenge! After careful consideration of your suggestions and a review of the current scoring system, I'm excited to announce a few updates that aim to make the competition even more engaging and equitable for all teams. These changes are designed to reward effort, improvement, and teamwork while maintaining fairness across teams with varying reading capacities.

New Scoring Adjustments

Team Balancing Bonus
To recognize teams that exceed their expected reading totals based on their combined maximum capacities, I'm introducing a Team Balancing Bonus. This bonus rewards teams for pushing beyond their limits while maintaining individual reading caps:

5% over Expected Total: 50 bonus points
10% over Expected Total: 100 bonus points
15% over Expected Total: 150 bonus points
20% or more over Expected Total: 200 bonus points

Example: If your team has a combined capacity of 36 books but reads 40 books in a month (11.11% over), your team will earn 100 bonus points.

Team Improvement Bonus
To encourage consistent growth and effort, I'm introducing a Team Improvement Bonus:
If your team increases its total books read compared to the previous month, you’ll earn an additional 30 bonus points. This bonus applies every month, rewarding teams for striving to improve regardless of their starting point.

Example: If your team read 29 books in Month 1 and increases to 35 books in Month 2, you’ll earn this bonus.

Adaptive Scoring System
To level the playing field further, I'm implementing an Adaptive Scoring System based on each team’s total monthly reading capacity:

Tier 1 (41-50 books): No multiplier
Tier 2 (31-40 books): 1.1x multiplier
Tier 3 (21-30 books): 1.2x multiplier

All points earned by the team (including bonuses) will be multiplied by this factor at the end of each month. However, if your team exceeds its tier’s capacity (e.g., a Tier 3 team with a capacity of 28 books reads into Tier 1 territory by completing 45 books), the multiplier will no longer apply. This adjustment ensures fairness as teams progress into higher tiers.

These updates will hopefully address concerns about disparities between teams with different reading capacities. By rewarding improvement and exceeding expectations, I'm aiming to ensure that every team has an opportunity to remain competitive while still celebrating those who consistently perform at high levels.

For example:
A maxed-out team reading their full capacity of 50 books will still score highly through consistent effort.
A team with a lower capacity that pushes beyond expectations or shows improvement month-over-month can now close the gap through bonuses and multipliers.

These changes mean that every team has a chance to shine, whether through consistency, improvement, or teamwork. I encourage you to strategize with your teammates to maximize your potential—whether that’s completing tasks together, exploring bonus genres, or setting stretch goals for the month.

I hope these adjustments inspire great participation and excitement as we begin this challenge together. I will be adding these improvements to the scoring sheets and your team threads over the course of the week. If you have any questions, fire away!

Happy reading!

Thank you for listening to me! Sounds like great changes. I don't fully understand everything you just said (Monday morning brain!!) and hope to not sound dense, but are the ones who signed up as 10 still locked at 10? Is this change for bonus contingent on those who signed up for less than 10 reading over? Such as if they signed up as 2, if they read 4 instead, etc?

Everyone is locked in currently, unless they can give me a very good reason to alter their BPM. I don't want to encourage artificial lower counts in an attempt to gain bonus points, and I'd like everyone to be honest, because at the end of the day, this is meant to be fun and encourage reading, and this challenge, in particular, is mean to encourage team camaraderie and HEALTHY competition.

I did A LOT of AI calculating and scenarios to ensure that this wouldn't overly benefit one side or another, but if we see that midway through the year things are wildly out of order, we can revisit.

The Team Improvement Bonus will apply to ALL teams equally, so if a 50 BPM team only reads 40 books in April, but goes up to 50 in May, they will also get the bonus.

The Team Balancing Bonus and Adaptive Scoring System is more focused on lower BPM teams. However, if a 50 BPM team isn't reading to their full potential each month, I will make a decision on whether or not they can claim a multiplier (they will just need to ask me about it).

Does that make sense? Once the formulas are in place, and we start reading, you will get a better idea of how it will affect point scores.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 913 comments I think so, thank you!

Ok Book Questers! All team sheets and threads should be updated with the new scoring system, but please check them out and make sure any information you had on the old sheets has migrated over correctly.

Additionally, please make an effort to check in with your team by the end of this week (around Dec 21st)! If you are missing team members, please reach out to them directly, or let me know and I will do so. If we still have missing members after Christmas, we will start doing some replacements.

Also, I currently have the following people in holding for a team:
✔️ Jill
✔️ Michelle's Empty Nest

As new people sign up, teams will be made or members replaced if people go missing.

Thank you all for the kind words about the scoring system. I hope we all have a great time with this challenge.

On a side personal note, we lost our family dog today, so it's been rough and it was nice to come back to the kindness, so I very much appreciate you all.
