PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I know there are mixed reviews of Penelope Fitzgerald's very short, 1979 Booker winner, Offshore, but I'm one who was happily got caught up in the tangled 'boarding house' community of barge-dwellers on the Thames in the 1960s. It is something like a commune, where these people share a space between landlubbers and seafarers.

Carolyn | 9841 comments I enjoyed reading this collection of short horror stories from Amazon Original Stories - all interesting and novel with varying degrees of creepiness.

The first historical fiction I've read on the topic of castrato singers. The editing could have been finetuned, but if you can focus on the plot and ignore the writing, this book can be quite impactful.

Carolyn | 9841 comments I don't generally read horror and don't think I'm in the right demographic for this book, so please take my review with a pinch of salt (and read some others!) if you do like nightmarish scenarios.

Carolyn | 9841 comments I'm glad this month's AR challenge made me finally tackle a book by Richard Flanagan. A challenging read indeed, but a good one!

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments Aussie author Benjamin Stevenson's third "Everyone" mystery may have been titled Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret to attract Christmas gift shoppers last year, but you can enjoy it whenever you're in the mood for something a little offbeat.

Loved the idea, liked the execution. Better for lit fic and family drama readers than for sci-fi readers.
