So, i've only read ATYD and personally i hate it. Has very little to do with the canon and probably that's why i think it's pretty bad.But thats my opinion as im a big fan of the canon. So i stick with the Harry Potter books. Although it's valid to try these fics (you might like it, and thats fine), but a least finish the Harry Potter books first, they are amazing.
If you want to understand more about the canon lore, you could look the Wizarding World website, it has a lot of official material about the world and characters of Harry Potter, i personally love it and im able to spend hours entertaining myself there.
But if the lore you are looking for is the one of the tiktok/social media fandom, especially the marauders, then ATYD is for you. Most people in the marauders tiktok/internet fandom follow the storyline of ATYD, but keep in mind that it has very little to do with the actual Harry Potter story.
Well, my final advise is: if you are in doubt, finish the Harry Potter books first and then try to read those fics, everyone has their personal taste so you might enjoy it more than i did :)
As a Marauder myself, I highly recommend that you finish reading Harry Potter and then start with the fanfiction, so you can understand better the characters. Sometimes, when I was reading, I got lost because I didn’t remember who each one was (there are lots of names, surnames, families, the whole black family, new characters, etc)My favorite from the ones I’ve read is ATYD. I think it’s an amazing story and I really enjoyed it. But I think fanfics are really personal, and whether you like them or not depends on the kind of stories you enjoy reading and if you prefer canon stuff or not.
I hope you enjoy reading HP and ATYD as much as I did!
Also pls lmk if there’s anything else I should watch/read to get more “lore” besides the movies ofc. tysm :)
