Hello Beth and Frederico, welcome. Beth the good or perhaps bad news on your to-be-read list is that this group tends to cause those lists to grow.

message 102: by Maria (new)

Maria | 1 comments Hi everyone
My name is Maria, and I've been a fan of classic literature for several years. My favorite books include The Bread-Winner by Xavier de Montépin, Pollyanna by Eleanor Porter, and right now, I'm reading the second part of Little Women, which is Little Men. I'm really looking forward to discussing these great works with all of you!

Lovely to have you here, Maria. I love Alcott. I read all her books when I was growing up and they still make me smile and feel warm.

message 107: by Emily (new)

Emily | 1 comments Hello!
My name is Emily. It's only been 6 months since I started to read more regularly and I need to catch up on the classics. As a history major, it's difficult to find time to read for fun rather than for work, so I'm usually reading classic short stories and novellas (thank you for the masterlist!). Currently, I'm really enjoying horror and gothic literature. Catch me lurking in the short story threads!

Alva Marit | 1 comments Hi! My name is Alva. I’m Swedish and currently living in Lithuania. I enjoy classics for their language and style, and I usually prefer reading in English. Some of my favorites are Charlotte Brontë, Anne Frank, and philosophical books.
This is actually the first time I’m joining a group here, and I’m really looking forward to being part of it!

Cosmin | 1 comments Hello everyone! I’m Cosmin, a 24-year-old from Romania. After a long hiatus from reading, I’ve recently rediscovered the joy of books and am diving headfirst into the classics. Lately, I’ve been captivated by Dostoyevsky’s works, which have really struck a chord with me. I’m excited to connect with you all, share insights, and explore new recommendations. Feel free to add me as a friend.

message 121: by Karen (new)

Karen Kefira (karenkefira) Hey, everyone! My name is Karen, and I'm in my mid 50s. I'm first getting active with Goodreads now, even though I officially made an account for myself in 2022, and have used it for book suggestions over the years. I'm an author working on my first novel; I already have quite a few agents interested in reading it when I finish, which is exciting. (Do not worry - I will NOT use this group for any kind of self promotion.) I'm also a trained vocalist who used to sing in rock bands, and a visual artist.

I've been an avid reader since I'm very young, but for some reason I blew off reading a lot of the books (classics) assigned in high school and college (rebellion?). I've been disappointed with a lot of the recent literary fiction that's been published, and figured it would be a good time to finally get into some of the "old" stuff.

This is my first group, so I don't quite understand how it works. Is there a set book per month? Or just suggestions? What if I were to go back and read something that was likely already discussed here? (I have The Brothers K and Anna Karenina sitting on my shelves waiting for me... )

Thanks, and looking forward to getting to know and chat with everyone!

~K.

Welcome to the group.

We have several current books that the group is reading. You can always look at our Books We Are Reading Now thread to see what we are currently reading and what is coming up next month.

All of our book discussion threads are open and can be commented on at anytime, even after the group discussion has ended. So if you want to comment on Anna Karenina, just go to our Old School Classics folder and you can find the book discussion there to comment on when you are ready.

Karen Kefira (karenkefira) Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone! Looking forward to being here. I got trapped in a terrible mystery novel, and I just want to get it over with, find out who did it, and move onto something GOOD.

MAMcK | 1 comments Hi, my name is Mary Ann, and I have relied on Goodreads for years. I'm an avid gardener, and recently moved from Florida to Upstate SC. To make friends, I have started a book club at our local coffee shop. We couldn't decide between classics or books from around the world, so we combined the two! We have read How Green Was My Valley (Wales), Cry the Beloved Country (S. Africa), and The Good Earth (China). Now I need to come up with ideas for our next few books!

Hi Mary Ann, you could do no worse than reading a book by a Mauritian compatriot of mine, J. M. G. Le Clezio, who won the Nobel Prize for literature, in 2008.

PS - Welcome!

message 150: by Hailey (new)

Hailey | 2 comments Hi everyone! I’m Hailey. It’s been a longtime desire of mine to read more of the classics, and while I’ve tackled a few on my own over the years, it’s always more motivating to have a group to discuss them with. I very recently picked Tess of the d’Urbervilles off of my bookshelf on a whim, only to poke around here and find it’s one of your August reads! So I’ll take that as a good sign.
