Solved!The book is Vigil by Robert Masello
I read this a year or two ago, it was given to me from a family member's stack of books and they can't remember the title either. It was a paperback, and the cover had an intentinal hole in it that showed another colored page underneath...I believe it was like looking into a cave. I'm not sure when the book was written/published.
I do NOT believe it's a Pendergast novel (Relic) - the item wasn't found in the jungle and I don't recall there being multiple museum murders. I also remember looking to see if the book was part of a series when I read it , and it wasn't part of any series that I could find.
Plot points I remember (as much in order as I can remember):
The start of the book has a couple on their honeymoon (or about to be married?) on a boat at sea - they find a cave and inside it is a mysterious fossil or relic in the wall - something undescribed happenes and one of them dies.
I want to say I remember the relic/fossil being described as black or obsidian.
When the body is recovered the fossil/relic is carved out in a big stone block and sent to a museum or reasearch facility - the room is full of bright white lights. The team that delivered the stone containing the fossil/relic wanted to be as far away from it as quickly as possible.
One of the characters that the main character calls on to assist is an old professor who "hears" a voice from what's inside the fossil/relic.
At one point the stone block it is contained in explodes as it is attempted to be opened (I think) and the old professor is in the hospital in a coma.
The angel/demon that escapes from the stone wants to cleanse the world and begins murdering people to try to learn their human form and mannerisms, one victim being a prostitute - there is something left behind at each murder scene...or left in an abandoned building (church maybe?) that helps the main character to track it down. I want to say one of the items taken is a red coat?
Near the end of the book the main character and his wife (girlfriend?) and 2 of their friends go to stay at a house the friends just bought in the woods and the angel/demon follows them there.
