Araych | 677 comments A Jewel in the Crown A Jewel in the Crown (The Secret Churchill Files, #1) by David Lewis by David Lewis

England, 1939. The book is a rather cinematic adventure story of a very capable young woman assisting Winston Churchill in a very important and dangerous task. Entertaining story but I never had the feeling that our heroine was ever in real danger. I did like it -- 3 stars.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments The Return of Ellie Black The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean by Emiko Jean

Elizabeth Black vanished from a party when she was 17, and reappears two years later, in a very bad state.

This book sort of skirts the line between YA and adult fiction. 3 stars.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments I am a fan of the compassionate, intelligent, Booker-winning Aussie author Richard Flanagan, so it's no surprise that I enjoyed his recent Question 7. He is a deeply insightful man who combines his historical research with moving prose. This goes from Aboriginal history to the atom bomb and beyond.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments I always enjoy Richard Russo's stories, and who could resist the lovely old dog on the cover of Somebody's Fool? I could say the dying town of North Bath is going to the dogs, but that would be a poor play on words, especially when it's being absorbed into a wealthier, more upmarket township.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting SECOND VIOLIN by John Lawton, the sixth novel in his historical mystery/thriller series featuring Inspector Troy of Scotland Yard.

The series is set before, during, and after WWII with the novels linked to various actual events along the timeline. This one is set in Europe in the early days of 1938 and 1939 as the Nazis have annexed both Austria and Czechoslovakia and the people in London are starting to glimpse what Hitler has next on his menu.
