Araych | 678 comments Lethal Prey Lethal Prey (Lucas Davenport #35; Virgil Flowers #16) by John Sandford by John Sandford

Lucas Davenport #35. In this one Lucas is teamed up with Virgil Flowers to hunt a female serial killer, something which almost never occurs in reality. The book follows Sandford's normal pattern of which i am a big fan. I loved the book and would have given 5 stars except for the ridiculous and very unsatisfying ending. Perhaps the author is setting up a sequel? In any case, 4 stars.

It happens more that people like to think about. That's why when a woman begins to be a serial killer, her numbers can easily overshadow a man's.

Currently, I'm reading "Look for Me" by Lisa Gardner.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting DOWN THE RIVER UNTO THE SEA by Walter Mosley, the first book in his King Oliver series set in modern day New York. I read the first four novels in his Easy Rawlins series but was looking to try his more recent stuff.

The book won the 2019 Edgar Award as the Best Mystery Novel of the Year. Once I finish it I am going to sample his Leonid McGill private eye series to see how it compares.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments The Disappearance The Disappearance by Philip Wylie by Philip Wylie

This book was published in 1951.

The plot: One day, the world splits into two alternate 'dimensions': all the human men disappear from one; and all the human women disappear from the other.

Interesting speculative/dystopian fiction.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments I know there are mixed reviews of Penelope Fitzgerald's very short, 1979 Booker winner, Offshore, but I'm one who was happily got caught up in the tangled 'boarding house' community of barge-dwellers on the Thames in the 1960s. It is something like a commune, where these people share a space between landlubbers and seafarers.

Green combines the travails of a young tuberculosis patient named Henry Reider with a history of the ubiquitous dread disease.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now about halfway through THE LONG FALL (2009) by Walter Mosley, the first book in his Leonid McGill mystery series set in New York City.

The novel was nominated for the now defunct Hammett Prize as the Best Crime Fiction Novel of the Year. If it ends well I may sample the next book in the series which is available at my local library.

The Fatal Scroll A Herculaneum Mystery (1) by Eric Siblin

Araych | 678 comments Blood Lines Blood Lines (Scott Brodie & Maggie Taylor, #2) by Nelson DeMille by Nelson DeMille & Alex DeMille

Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor 2. Brodie and Taylor are assigned a case in Berlin which quickly spirals almost out of control. Islamic terrorism, German neo-Nazis and ex-Stasi secret police from the former East Germany. The book is an entertaining adventure thriller with some funny snark from Brodie. At 500 pages it's a bit long but I really liked it -- 4 stars.
