Harari is a historian and philosopher who expounds on Homo sapiens (humans), from ''the beginning' to who knows what will happen in the future.

Well-researched and enlightening. 5 stars

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments I have to say The Names by Florence Knapp is quite a debut. It takes choosing a name for your baby to a whole nuther level, especially when the father is a control freak. Terrific book club choice or conversation starter.

Four stars, but a very disturbing book with unlikable characters: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I read and reviewed "Remembrance of Earth's Past' science fiction trilogy a few years ago, and now I'm listening to the audiobooks.

The second book in the series:

The Dark Forest The Dark Forest (Remembrance of Earth’s Past, #2) by Liu Cixin by Liu Cixin

Earth is preparing for a life-or-death battle with the Trisolaran aliens, who are going to arrive in four centuries.

A bit over-written, but it's a good book. 4 stars

Araych | 677 comments Smoke and Embers Smoke and Embers (An Inspector Troy, #9) by John Lawton by John Lawton

Inspector Troy #9. I've been reading the series in order so I'm a fan. In fact there's not a lot of Troy in this one but the plot sweeps the reader and the characters along in a powerful grip. Takes place in England 1950 and before and also Germany during and after the war. Amazing powerful story of people caught in the events of the time including some rather graphic scenes of Auschwitz and the death camps. A stunning powerful story. I wasn't crazy about the ending but the book still gets 5 stars. Highly recommended.

Chris | 316 comments Finished The Helium Murder, a cozy mystery by Camille Minichino. #2 in the Periodic Table mystery series begun in the late 90's. Gloria, a retired physicist, becomes a consultant in a murder investigation of a congresswoman who was soon to vote on a program involving the country's Helium stores. Pleasant, very easy read. Stock characters, little tension. Somewhat disappointing. 2.5 stars.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks by Max Brooks

The premise of this book is that Max Brooks - an agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission - interviews survivors of 'The Zombie War' to provide a historical record of the devastating horror.

Interesting format for a zombie novel....and a rollicking good story. 4 stars

Araych | 677 comments Marble Hall Murders Marble Hall Murders (Susan Ryeland, #3) by Anthony Horowitz by Anthony Horowitz

Susan Ryland #3. A troubled young man is trying to write a continuation of the Atticus Pund series and, as things go along, it goes worse and worse. Susan is caught up in the messy goings-on and must try to extricate herself as she edits the book and tries to solve the crimes. Horowitz has done it again; this is an amazing book. I loved it. 5 stars.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments I enjoy this popular series. What with his love of fine food, wines, and ladies, Martin Walker's Bruno, Chief of Police may sound like a gentle village 'flic', but he fought in Bosnia and is a match for anyone. The Crowded Grave is the fourth book.
