PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments Peter Carey is an interesting, award-winning (lots of awards) Aussie author who lives in New York but writes about his homeland. I'm a fan.

I have wanted to read Oscar and Lucinda for years because it sounded great - historical fiction, a pair of odd-bods, and a wild plot. Plus it won the 1988 Booker Prize and the 1989 Miles Franklin (Australia's most prestigious literary award), and I'm trying to read some awarded books. I'm happy I've done so, though this isn't my favourite Carey.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments On the other hand, I read A River Runs Through It and Other Stories by Norman Maclean and completely understand why it is often referred to as an American classic despite not winning a bunch of awards. Just stunning, and the lengthy foreword by Annie Proulx for the 25th anniversary edition is excellent.

In this multi-genre novel, climate change is devastating the planet; an artificial intelligence is running for office against a human; there's a murder mystery; and there are futuristic sci-fi elements.

I had never read any of C. J. Box's books. I just started his first, "Open Season." I haven't finished yet, but so far I like it. I also enjoy the character and the setting. I will likely read more of his; however, I will read the Joe Pickett series in order.
