question
Confused. Please explain?

Can someone please explain why Maud and Lilly's identities were switched? Like why did Maud live Sue's life and Sue lived Maud's, when Mrs. Sucksby revealed it to Maud? Why didn't they let Maud know the truth of what really happened to her mother? Also, why did Mr. Rivers marry Maud, when, when it is Sue who is the daughter of Marianne Lilly, who has the fortune?

The identities of Maud and Sue were switched as part of Mrs. Sucksby's revenge against the wealthy family that abandoned Marianne Lilly's baby. Mrs. Sucksby swapped the infants - her own daughter (living as Maud) and Marianne's daughter (living as Sue) - to elevate her own child to a life of privilege. Marianne Lilly's daughter / heiress grew up in the slums, unaware of her true heritage, while Mrs Sucksby's daighter lived as the supposed heiress in Marianne Lilly’s family.
Only Mrs Sucksby was aware of this initial switch. Mr Rivers married Maud because he believed she was the legitimate heiress to Marianne Lilly's fortune. He was unaware of the baby swap orchestrated by Mrs Sucksby and thought marrying Maud would give him control over her wealth. The revelation of the swap and Sue's true identity only comes to light later, upending everyone's plans and assumptions.
I believe that is correct? It is complicated!
