In another group I'm in (EXCELLENT group if you like dark books in any genre) there's a thread talking about Dark Urban Fantasy books. These tend to be my favorite books/series and I know I've seen a trend in that direction with a number of our members. SO... I thought I'd see what y'all have to recommend as well!

Any darker books you'd like to recommend to the group? Anything in Urban Fantasy, Fantasy, Paranormal Romance or anything else dealing with paranormal aspects. Do they even make a Dark Paranormal Romance... hmmm...

One series that I haven't seen too much chatter about is the Joe Pitt series by Charlie Huston. The first book is Already Dead. I've read 3 of the 4 books that are published and have enjoyed them. I've seen them classified as Noir and I think the description fits perfectly! Dark, gritty, violent books about Joe Pitt, a vampire, and different mysteries that surround him in his life.

new_user I like dark reads myself. I would consider Lynn Viehl's Darkyn series, starting with If Angels Burn, dark, even though there are some lighter moments. I would say the first is the darkest, with some sexual violence perpetrated by a villain and a supporting character. UF.

You would never know it from the title or the cover, but Joey W. Hill's Daughters of Arriane series, starting with A Mermaid's Kiss, really plumbs the depths of human emotion. They seem very real. PNR.

I loved the Darkyn series by Lynn Viehl. I hope she continues it (I know there's a Kyndred series now, but I still want more from the Darkyn). I also really enjoyed Joey W/ Hill's books. I'm really looking forward to the third in that series.

new_user I would love to see more from the Darkyn, especially Tremayne. *sigh* I just hope the next series is as good. I'm hoping to read that soon. I can't wait until Hill's next book is out. I'm squirming over here, LOL.

I love the Joe Pitt books. The most recent, and last one, arrived yesterday. It's called
My Dead Body A Novel by Charlie Huston . Hope to get to it some time next week.

I didn't realise the next Joe Pitt book was out already! Now I really need to read #4 so I can read that one too...

I'll have to look into the Darkyn & Daughters of Arriane series - thanks for the rec.

Thanks for the mention Shanon! :)

And I desperately want to read the Huston books but I haven't yet managed to get my hands on them.

Sandy I would recommend P.N. Elrod's Vampire Files series. They feature Jack Fleming as a vampire P.I. in prohibition era Chicago.

new_user I can't believe I forgot Angels' Blood. The romance here is dark because Raphael, the love interest, is a very ambiguous character. He is an angel, but he is not at all "good." As angels in this world run merciless corporate conglomerates, this is not hard to believe. He's an uber-powerful archangel used to deciding fates, especially those of the humans for whom he has little empathy, at a whim. There is some doubt at some points that Raphael wouldn't kill Elena if she pushed too much. So nothing warm and pure like her other series, LOL.

I also want to mention Shadowfae, which is dark because it's about a succubus and all the problems associated with that. Needless to say, she has some serious self-esteem issues, LOL.

Joey Hill's Vampire Servant series is very good, although it may not be for everyone because it more explicitly involves content like her contemporary BDSM series. However,if you can tolerate that subject matter, the stuff is seriously good.
