Katy (katysmith) | 2 comments Forgotten Voices: Excerpts from Valentina's Journal was released last March. It's a historical fiction account of a local labor dispute and its long-lasting effects on the community. The advised reader's age, per the publisher, was middle school; however, a local library's adult book club felt it was more geared towards adults.

Forgotten Voices explores the impact a labor dispute (coal miners organizing to form a union) had on a 13-year-old girl. Because of the violence, abuse from the hired mine guards, and the lack of police protection from frivolous arrests, Valentina was deeply affected by how it impacted her community and her family. It's more of a coming-of-age story, about the incident that changed her from a carefree girl into a woman who fought for change.

Trigger warnings: There is violence in the story, the violence between the coal company owners and their guards toward the striking families. It's discussed with no explicit scenes. What was written follows closely with court depositions, news reports, and personal journals.

My purpose in writing the story was the struggle to form unions is being forgotten, especially in the area where this story is set. What happened over 100 years ago still affects that area today. No voice should be forgotten, especially for a displaced group of people who simply wanted a better life for their families.
