Tim Watts (redswatts) | 551 comments A very happy Birthday to you Val.

I am still recovering from the encore screening of A Streetcar Named Desire from the National Theatre at the Young Vic in 2014 with Gillian Anderson, Vanessa Kirby and Ben Foster. What a brutal but triumphant production. Gillian Anderson was just outstanding as Blanche. I have never known a cinema audience sit in stunned silence at the end and this was after we saw Andrew Scott's one-man performance of Uncle Vanya a few weeks back.

I then came home to watch a recording of GWS v The Suns and that left me totally exhausted. What a game which I nearly gave up on several occasions thinking the Giants were out of it only to stage a wonderful comeback.

The Swans should have won by 70 points at least. Their goal kicking ( yes you Amartey) was a disgrace.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 551 comments Just looking at next week's fixtures and wondering how on earth anyone can tip the first match let alone a margin. Two teams who you never know which side will turn up. Port were awful against the Swans and the less said about the Blues against the Roos last weekend the better.
Good luck everyone!

Given Port have home advantage, which counted for nothing last Saturday, I am going with them.

Port by 16
Swans ......going with my heart but little hope
Suns.....to bounce back
Hawks....could be a shock given the Roos support in Tasmania
Pies....thanks for one banker

That's a great cast! Gillian Anderson is an amazing actress - so versatile. We saw an MTC production last year with Nikki Shiels and Blanche and Michelle Lim Davidson as Stella (you may have seen her in the ABC's The Newsreader). It was excellent too. My younger daughter came because she thought it was time she explored "the classics" - I didn't think it was her cuppa but she loved it. You've had an emotional weekend!

EDIT: I just remembered seeing Andre Previn's opera of Streetcar done by Opera Australia some years ago. Not that great musically, but Yvonne Kenny as Blanche and Antoinette O'Halloran as Stella were terrific.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 551 comments Hi Val, I can see Antoinette as Stella. That must have been very interesting.
Gillian Anderson is a truly wonderful actress and all the accents in this production were spot on. We once saw The Night of the Iguana with Frances Barber and the whole theatre was very steamy to say the least. It felt like being in the tropics and they did have rain on the stage so very atmospheric. The interval was full of people fanning themselves down. We will never forget that evening and this film felt much the same. It was staged in the round with the set revolving and the audience were right on the edge of the stage. I do not know how the cameras got right into the actors, but you certainly felt part of the audience.

theDuke | 6492 comments Hmmm...a couple of toughies here, most of you seemed be convinced that Bulldogs have a easy game here. However, the Bulldogs have only beaten one top 8 side this season (GWS), and whilst the wayward Swans are out of the 8, we could witness late surge from them yet. Hawks v North ought to be a cracking game, maybe game of the week; both sides have performed well at their 2nd home, and whilst Hawthorn are the favourites here, i wouldn't write off North getting another win here. Teams fresh off byes don't always benefit them. Tigers v Crows - it's unlikely, but Richmond do have a good rep against Adelaide, thus a small possiblilty of a upset here, but i don't think so. And as for Port vs Carlton....no idea....a coin flip!

Thus just to be different; round 16:

Carlton - 5pts
Sydney
Gold Coast
North
Collingwood
Adelaide

Port Adelaide Power (available) v Carlton Blues (available)
5.4.34 (Q1) 0.3.3

The scoreline flatters Carlton. They were clueless tonight. They've got Collingwood next week and the Lions the week after. God help them! Anita was the closest this week and wins $8.00 for The Mirabel Foundation. Congratulations Anita!

Hi Duke,

I'm now in the Aberystywth area. I was based up near Bala for the first 3 days and rode out to various places: Montgomery, Llanidloes, Dolgellau/Machynlleth to name a few. I can recommend a trip to Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall between Bala & Llanfyllin, very impressive.

On a more sombre note, I visited Aberfan yesterday. The memorial gardens and cemetery are very poignant. Following the disaster, the pupils at my primary school in Hertfordshire raised funds which paid for the planting of a memorial woodland on a hillside near the village. I was hoping to get up close to it but was unable to find it unfortunately. A lot has changed since the time it was planted, almost 60 years ago now.

I will be heading home tomorrow.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 551 comments Hi Sussex, I did not know Spellbrook had changed its spelling. I thought it was always double ll. I do recall what a reputation your school had and just how many pupils passed their 11 plusses from a small school of that size. When driving by it, I always remembered that from our primary school days. From my relatively large primary school in Stansted, we had an extraordinary year in 1970 when 5 of us passed the 11 plus, the first pupils to achieve that for about 3 years as I recall. Sounds like you had a wonderful trip. I do miss travels around Britain and just how much our beautiful countryside can change in relatively short distances.
Carlton were awful again last night, such a one-sided game. I did not know Amartey picked up another injury and is out again tonight. I think it will be a great game for the Dogs to mark Bontempelli's 250th match.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 551 comments Sussex, I meant to say your list of places visited include Dolgellau, where my grandparents on my mum's side had their honeymoon in the mid 1920's. It must have been very special as they named their house in Stansted which my grandmother owned until 1981 after the town. I bet it has changed since then, but I never got to go there.
My grandparents never drove although my grandad had a motorbike. He worked on the railways for nearly 50 years, so they used to travel everywhere by train with free passes for both of them.

My old stomping ground Sussex. Lived in the Aberystwyth area for 18 years, during the 80s, 90s and early noughties, my sister still works there today. I know north Wales very well, very dramatic and beautiful mountain region. I used to a lot green-laning back in the 1990s, exploring the little known almost forgotten and little used byways and drover routes...very pretty part of country. And my favourite mountain to climb in my youth is 'up' there too, Cader Idris (less touristy than Yr Wyddfa or Snowdon as you'll know it) near Dolgellau. I visited Aberfan many years ago, a lot has changed since those days. The Welsh government, freshly funded from UK with nearly half a billion pounds will be spent on clearing up or safeguarding the hundreds of remaining mining spoil heaps that still little the country today. I haven't seen the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall since i was a kid, but did a canal boat holiday trip a few years ago on the Llangollen/Stropshire Union canal.

The only thing i don't like about North Wales now, are prevalence of of average speed cameras everywhere there now & the daft 20 mph speed limits placed anywhere where there is a building suitated. They've ruined the EVO triangle near Betws -Y Coed; Wales' version of the Nurburgring. That's a great road to drive or ride, made up of three roads, the A5, A543 & B4501.

Sounds like you had a lovely time of it....i must go back there someday, i haven't been up there since 2012...just before i stopped driving for good.

It's a pretty town and not surprisingly, very Welsh speaking...i nearly bought a house there once, right in the main street. Somebody else beat me to it. I wonder what it looked like 100 years ago, especially before all the modern bypass system there now.

Val H. | 22152 comments Apologies for being behind with results. Busy weekend.

Friday night's result:

Sydney Swans (Anita) v Western Bulldogs (Tazz)
3.5.23 (Q1) 4.2.26
6.8.44 (Q2) 8.5.53
12.9.81 (Q3) 14.6.90
14.12.96 (Q4) 16.9.105

A very close game which could have gone either way. Players seemed to drift in and out of the game. The Bont didn't have a stellar night; Freijah only shone in the last quarter; Libber was quieter than usual. Same with the Swans. Chad Warner was brilliant one moment, ordinary the next. Papley too. I thought Grundy played well.

Saturday's results:

Gold Coast Suns (Suzy) v Melbourne Demons (available)
5.7.37 (Q1) 0.1.1
8.9.57 (Q2) 5.3.33
14.11.95 (Q3) 7.7.49
15.14.104 (Q4) 12.13.85

Hawthorn Hawks (available) v North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve)
5.5.35 (Q1) 2.3.15
13.8.86 (Q2) 5.5.35
17.11.113 (Q3) 6.7.43
23.12.150 (Q4) 9.11.65

Collingwood Magpies (available) v West Coast Eagles (Sussex)
1.3.9 (Q1) 2.6.18
5.5.35 (Q2) 6.7.43
10.6.66 (Q3) 8.8.56
13.10.88 (Q4) 8.11.59

The Eagles were the surprise packet of the round, really taking it up to Collingwood - or were theMagpies having an off night? It was hard not to barrack for the underdog and at three quarter time, the game was still up for grabs. I keep singing the old Coodabeens' ditty "When The Pies Tumble Down In July" - and hoping it will happen!

theDuke | 6492 comments I like the Thursday game, much better that way, one doesn't wait quite as long for the next round to begin...plus it does save on having a lot of double games on a Saturday and Sunday. Speaking of which, there was a double today, why play 5 game son a Saturday but only 2 on Sunday, me wonders. The AFL could've moved one of them over to Sunday. I presume money has something to do with it no doubt.

Well..a straightforward run of 7 games thus far, no surprises yet. The next one will decide whom gets a full house or not! The last one ought to play out as expected....unless the Dees have an ace up their sleeves.

Just been looking at my afl position, and noticed one only goes up the ladder in small amounts for a correct tip, when nearly everyone else also tips the same team. Get one wrong however, and it's down down and down baby!

I'm doing a different tipping on the AFL with another group, of which i'm doing much better on that one, currently sitting on 95 tips and a decent margin of 437 atm. Overall position currently around 163k odd out of 420k. Aiming to break into the top 3rd...so long as my luck holds out! But get just one wrong and it's like snakes and ladders......weeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

message 497: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22152 comments I quite like the Thursday games too. It makes the week seem shorter and makes my job easier as I get more time to log the results and get ready for the next week's fixtures. I'm not sure why the AFL scheduled two games on Friday night this week. It could have something to do with other events scheduled at the grounds or even resting some grounds (SCG, still recovering from the Andrea Bocelli concert in April. Teams must be close to striking rather than play there - it's an OH&S issue now) or even public holidays in the different sates. Who knows? TV rights is another issue too with Channel 7 (free-to-air) and Foxtel (pay TV) battling over programming and clashes.

Remarkably, there have been no upsets this round so far and most tipsters are sitting on 7 from 7. The Swans/Freo game should hopefully separate the wheat from the chaff. I only saw the highlights of this arvo's game and at least the Bombers were competitive for the first three quarters. Most of them are just kids so hopefully there are some successful years ahead.

Today's results:

Essendon Bombers (Val) v Gold Coast Suns (Suzy)
3.0.18 (Q1) 3.1.19
6.5.41 (Q2) 7.3.45
