"BALL UP!" - Val's 2025 Aussie Rules Footy Tipping *Open to Everyone*

Lions
Pies
Bulldogs...a tough one and we will be in Adelaide ahead of the British Lions game after this match. May get to see some of it in an Adelaide pub.
Giants....another close one
Bombers...one for confidence booster for Val's young guns
Dockers
Demons...but could go either way
Swans...keeping the faith
Port...would have gone Sussex but invited to a few wineries with friends in afternoon

It's a hard life :-)

Collingwood Magpies
Western Bulldogs
Geelong Cats
Essendon Bombers
Hawthorn Hawks
Melbourne Demons
Sydney Swans
Port Adelaide Power

I was wrong about Amartey. He is out for between 8 and 12 weeks, so season over. Papley is 2 to 3 but this will leave the Swans light again in the forwards.
I am now going to the Port v Eagles game on Sunday courtesy of our friends in Adelaide who have access to a box. I will be accompanied by Mary our wonderful 90-year-old friend who emigrated in 1968 as a 10 pound pom. It is her daughter and son in law who have the box for the game. Hopefully my presence will help the Eagles to regain some former glory but doubt it. Fingers crossed Sussex.

Carlton Blues (available) v Brisbane Lions (Jed)
3.3.21 (Q1) 5.4.34
6.6.42 (Q2) 11.6.72
6.10.46 (Q3) 15.8.98
9.12.66 (Q4) 15.13.103
Carlton looked better than in recent weeks but the Lions are looking ominous. Steve had the margin spot on and once again earns $8.00 for Backpack Bed For Homeless. The man's unstoppable!

Gold Coast Suns (Suzy) v Collingwood Magpies (available)
2.5.17 (Q1) 0.4.4
6.7.43 (Q2) 0.8.8
8.9.57 (Q3) 3.11.29
10.9.69 (Q4) 8.15.63
An exciting game. The Suns started strong and were fierce in the tackles. Collingwood didn't score a goal until the third quarter and paid for their inaccuracy. In the final quarter the Pies fought back to take the lead but kudos to the Suns who scored another two quick goals to regain the ascendancy.

Western Bulldogs (Tazz) v Adelaide Crows (available)
3.1.19 (Q1) 4.2.26
7.3.45 (Q2) 10.4.64
10.6.66 (Q3) 14.9.93
15.8.98 (Q4) 16.13.109
GWS Giants (Duke) v Geelong Cats (available)

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Essendon Bombers (Val)
3.4.22 (Q1) 3.0.18
3.5.23 (Q2) 3.6.24
3.9.57 (Q3) 4.10.34
6.10.46 (Q4) 4.13.37
Fremantle Dockers (available) v Hawthorn Hawks (available)
3.1.19 (Q1) 2.2.14
6.1.37 (Q2) 7.4.46
8.1.49 (Q3) 9.8.62
12.5.77 (Q4) 9.10.64
I didn't see a lot of football today except perhaps for the worst game of the season - that between Richmond and Essendon! It was painful to watch - both sides seemed to have no idea about basic fundamentals. I don't know what happened to Hawthorn in the final quarter. At three quarter time they looked like they were going to kick away.

"As for the game itself, the two teams submitted a contender for one of the worst matches of the season. In perfect conditions, both teams committed a glut of skill errors all night and struggled to hit a target up forward for the entirety. With a minute to go, the game had a total of 109 clangers, which is 20 per cent above the season average.
Richmond was goalless in the middle two quarters, but the Bombers weren’t much better during the same period, kicking just the one major. After 12 consecutive behinds, and 72 minutes, Essendon youngster Archer May finally kicked the game’s seventh goal midway through the third quarter. Ninety-three minutes separated Richmond’s third and fourth goals, which was almost as long as the drought they had against Sydney in Round 13 (99 minutes)."
It was truly dreadful!

Melbourne Demons (available) v North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve)
3.3.21 (Q1) 4.2.26
6.5.41 (Q2) 5.6.36
11.9.75 (Q3) 8.11.59
18.11.119 (Q4) 12.11.83
St Kilda Saints (Tim) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
4.0.24 (Q1) 5.3.33
7.4.46 (Q2) 5.6.36
11.8.74 (Q3) 9.7.61
13.9.87 (Q4) 14.8.92
Port Adelaide Power (available) v West Coast Eagles (Sussex)
2.2.14 (Q1) 6.3.39
5.6.36 (Q2) 7.5.47
7.12.54 (Q3) 9.6.60
12.15.87 (Q4) 9.7.61
I didn't see any of today's games but it seems at least the losing sides were competitive for two or even three quarters. I'm hoping this means that next season may be more competitive than this one has been. I'm even adjusting my criticism of my Bombers last night (after two more serious injuries) when I read that they "played their 12th debutant for the season on Saturday night..., and fielded nine players aged 20 or younger as well as six players with seven games or less experience."
Tim will be relieved his Swans managed to escape with a win and I hope he enjoyed the first three quarters in Adelaide.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this or you have seen it, but I was passed a useful snippet by a friend up here regarding the Pies.
Since the Suns entered the competition, no side has ever won the premiership if they have lost to the Suns in the regular season. My wish is that the stat remains true.
I did not see the Swans game live as was at the Port match and somehow avoided the scoreline and have just watched the match this morning. I am relieved I did not watch it live as would have been frantic in the closing minutes.

Giants by a more modest 41
Lions
Hawks
Swans
Demons
Eagles
Cats
Pies
Suns in a very tight match just to be different.
By the way I cannot believe that Harley Reid's trip on Travis Boak did not warrant at least a 2-week suspension. Disgraceful.

Our friends including the 89-year-old Mary, (I did her out of a year as she is 90 on August 16th), took us for lunch before the game to Chalk Hill winery in the McClaren Vale for a wine tasting and lunch. Gary (Mary's son in law) drives a Ute and Mary puts us all to shame by hopping into the back like a 16-year-old. She is still driving and regular takes her neighbours in the home to the shops although she no longer uses the homes minibus. Her granddaughter is in the process of interviewing her with the aim to write about her life which includes many incredible stories, both before she emigrated from the UK in 1968 and her time since in Australia. She told me yesterday she has always regarded me as family, and she certainly was a wonderful "Aunt" for my first 10 years. They made me so welcome to their home in 1979 when I first visited Australia and to my considerable shame, I stayed for 6 weeks which was at least 5 weeks beyond what was planned. She has now included my wife and I to a planned meal in the McClaren Vale at a top restaurant for her birthday which is just for family. The bigger function for wider friends is a BBQ in the Belair National Park where she volunteered for over 40 years the next day. A truly remarkable and very proud Australian.

Lions
Hawks
Swans
Blues
Eagles (gonna switch it up and go for an Eagles win for once)
Cats
Magpies
Crows

Essendon are in all sorts right now, and injuries mounting...i think the orange Tsunami are going to make things very ugly for the ailing Bombers. I don't think it's beyond to realms of GWS thumping the home side, but 60 points might be a tad on the strong side, but then again young Cadman is proving to be an outstanding player, so who knows..he might get another 6, 7 or 8 goals later on today! That said, 60 points sound a bit of stretch to me, but if SJ bags the closest margin again, i'll take my hat off to him.....and I'll have a very big smile on my face! GWS needs the percentage boosting points! :)

GWS - 44 pts (this could be an absolute bloodbath, but keeping my margin to a conservative level)
Lions (Bullies seem to struggle with beating teams in the eight, they've only beaten GWS thus far)
Hawks (potential for an upset here, but unlikely)
Swans (they've got some form back, but North won't make it easy for Sydney)
Demons (50/50 game)
Eagles (given the shockingly awful game last week re Tigers v Bombers, it's hard to see how Richmond could win this> However, if they bring their A game with them, they may steal the much needed win from the home side, i'm going with the favs)
Cats (dead cert)
Magpies (Collingwood won't drop 2 in a row)
Crows (another 50/50, but Suns have struggled in Adelaide)

Essendon by 7
Bulldogs
Port Adelaide
North Melbourne

I enjoyed, if that is the right word, Michael Gleeson's article in The Age this weeK;
"Essendon have used 41 players so far this year. After the mid-season draft, they have 47 players on their list. They lost three more to injury on the weekend, with Nic Martin not now only out for the rest of this year but for most of next year as well after doing his ACL in Saturday night's equivalent of a Fidel Castro speech. Will Setterfield also hurt his foot, and his season is done too, but he will see a surgeon about the Lisfranc injury to see if they need to operate. Given Essendon's season. you might as well assume they will need to use the scalpel. In fact, Setterfield should just head to the Epworth (Hospital) with his dressing gown and toothbrush now. Ben Hobbs also came out of the game with a sore groin. Given Essendon's run with injuries, he will probably be discovered to have osteitis pubis by the end of the week, or a groin ripped from the bone, if he is not already in an iron lung. Mcmahon and Unwin will debut for the club by season's end, making it at least 43 players they will have used out of the 47. And of that remainder, Nik Cox has missed all year with his concussion issues. This is no excuse for the hideousness of Saturday night, but it is a part-explanation."
And that was before they broke news of Nate Caddy's injury!

Essendon Bombers (Val) v GWS Giants (Duke)

1.8.14 (Q2) 8.3.51
5.10.40 (Q3) 13.5.83
7.14.56 (Q4) 16.8.104
I wasn't displeased by my boys' performance tonight. They were outclassed by a much better side but still managed to compete for four quarters - and as a one-eyed supporter, of course I wasn't happy with a lot of the umpiring decisions!
Philip tipped the closest margin when he went Giants by 50 so $8.00 is set aside for Canteen. Congratulations.

Brisbane Lions (Jed) v Western Bulldogs (Tazz)
2.2.14 (Q1) 2.1.13
7.4.46 (Q2) 5.3.33
0.11.71 (Q3) 8.4.52
12.14.86 (Q4) 12.4.76
Just when you thought the Lions were home and hosed, up by four goals at three-quarter time, the Dogs came storming back to get within a goal. A very exciting and hard-fought game.

5.8.38 (Q3) 14.7.91
8.8.56 (Q4) 16.9.105
Well the first two games went much as expected (even in cold, drenching rain in Tassie) but it seems the Demons and the Eagles didn't get our memo. Still, it was good to see the Tigers performing well.

Geelong Cats (available) v St Kilda Saints (Tim)

If there's anything better than Collingwood losing, it's Collingwood losing by a point! Poor sport? Moi? You'd better believe it! And those chipper Suns have also been put back in their box.

We have just recovered from ours with a houseful of guests for the British Lions match in Brisbane. Think this weekend at the MCG will be very tough for them as the Wallabies deserved more from the match at Suncorp. Appalling decisions going against them including the disallowed try in the second half for reasons well and truly beyond my comprehension.
Anyway, we are going down for the match, as well as the following weekend in Sydney.
