Collingwood Magpies (available) v Essendon Bombers (Val)
3.4.22 (Q1) 1.1.7
6.5.41 (Q2) 5.3.33
11.9.75 (Q3) 8.3.51
16.11.107 (Q4) 10.6.66
Fremantle Dockers (available) v Adelaide Crows (available)

12.8.80 (Q3) 5.8.38
12.13.85 (Q4) 9.13.67
Neither game was up to scratch today. Essendon actually took the lead at the start of the third quarter but it didn't last long. They didn't handle the slippery conditions and they certainly didn't handle Collingwood. I gave up on the second game at half time. Freo looked well in control although the score shows the Crows had the better of them in the final quarter.

St Kilda Saints (Tim) v Brisbane Lions (Jed)
2.0.12 (Q1) 4.6.30

The Giants were never really in tonight's game. Missed the two earlier games but good to see the Roos putting up a spirited fight against Port over in Adelaide.

Our Queensland tipsters did well this week, the rest of us not too bad. It's really tight at the top of the overall ladder! But congrats to the winners.

ADELAIDE CROWS: Defence wobbly again.
BRISBANE LIONS: Reminder of quality.
CARLTON: Now repeat that.

ESSENDON: Not same level.

Fremantle Dockers

Collingwood Magpies
Melbourne Demons
GWS Giants
Hawthorn Hawks
Brisbane Lions

Round 8:
Roos - 5
Dockers
Bulldogs
Blues
Pies
Demons
GWS (Giants can't lose 3 in a row, could they?)
Hawks
Suns
Gauntlet tip: Melbourne Demons

Surprised I managed to top tipping last week and should have stuck with my feelings of the Giants playing in Canberra.
This week is tough
Bombers by 15
Saints (not sure why but guess home ground advantage)
Bulldogs
Crows
Demons (surely)
Pies
Giants (oh dear have no conviction at all of Swans improving)
Hawks
Suns (was impressed last week)

Stuck at home with Covid. Lying under the doona, reading, dozing, reading again, forgetting everything I’ve read. After two weeks I emerge negative and drive to the café, pick up The Age, turn to the sports pages. A photo: Buddy Franklin leaving the field with his arm across the shoulders of a teammate, after Sunday’s match, which his team, the Sydney Swans, has lost to Collingwood. Collingwood is at the top of the ladder, Swans at eleven. And the Collingwood crowd booed Buddy Franklin, a hero of the game, a dancing god of the game, in his last season. Franklin is thirty six, battle-hardened. His face, in this photo, is calm, composed; but it is also as soft as a boy’s. It’s a wounded face, with that wiped look of someone who’s copped a ringing slap across the cheek: all his expression lines are gone. In my fortnight of isolation I must have lost a couple of skins: I shock myself by bursting into tears. I turn a page and find ‘a Collingwood member’ who says he did boo but realises in hindsight that it was ‘a mistake’: ‘I booed,’ he said, ‘because everone else booed.’ The Guardian doesn’t hold back: ‘It’s about the internalised hatred that men – who are the dominant force in shaping and sustaining AFL culture – have for themselves and each other. The Great Southern and Ponsford stands merely provide a haven for the boozed-up, brittle and broken to project their own self-hatred and insecurities on to others.’

Essendon Bombers (Val) v North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve)
6.1.37 (Q1) 2.3.15
7.5.47 (Q2) 3.4.22
8.7.55 (Q3) 8.6.54
9.11.65 (Q4) 9.8.62
A close but not particularly inspiring game. Essendon started strong and got out to a more than four goal lead but then lost a bit of concentration and let the Roos back into the game. And the Roos did start to look more like a team than they have of late. They just need to maintain that pressure for all four quarters. Not that Essendon are a particularly strong opponent. And now we've lost Harry Jones to a broken? dislocated? ankle and Jordan Ridley to a hamstring. The Dons are dropping like flies.
Both Duke and I were the closest tipsters this week so $8.00 goes to both the Centre for Eye Research Australia and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Well done us!

I did not see that piece on Collingwood so thank you for sending. I was a that game and dismayed at the action of those so-called fans. It was one of Buddy's last matches in Melbourne and they tore into him from the start. No way to treat a legend and it was such a toxic atmosphere. No other team has a set of fans like Collingwood and that is why I really dislike them. All teams have rivalry and there will be plenty of banter at the SCG on Sunday but its all-good fun.

The Swans have had the better end of results against their home rivals for a while now, but given their injuries atm, maybe GWS can get up here, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Swans find a way to win again. BTW: GWS also fell foul to that third quarter drought last week!

I didn't see much footy today what with the Federal election plus I was at a cello concert this evening. However I'll be sure to catch as much as I can of that Pies/Cats game! Plenty controversy it seems!

If punters could lodge their tips by midnight WEDNESDAY May 7 (U.K. time) it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 11.00am THURSDAY (U.K. time) if absolutely necessary.

ADELAIDE CROWS: Sign they’re trustworthy.
BRISBANE LIONS: Country Roads. Repeat. (refers to the John Denver song played every time Charlie Cameron scores a goal)
CARLTON: Crows own them.
COLLINGWOOD: Close game misfortune.
ESSENDON: (Captain Zach) Merrett is unbelievable.
FREMANTLE: Totally untrustworthy. Yuck.
GEELONG: Danger (Patrick Dangerfield) spectacular late.
GOLD COAST SUNS: Still behind sibling.
GWS GIANTS: Not contenders currently.
HAWTHORN: A perfect party.
MELBOURNE: Without (Max) Gawn... unimaginable.
NORTH MELBOURNE: Shot clock, Finnbar! (debutant Finnbar Maley)
PORT ADELAIDE: Gap to contenders.
RICHMOND: Nowhere near them.
ST KILDA: Sweet revenge, Ross. (Coach Ross Lyon against former side, Freo)
SYDNEY SWANS: Still big brother.
WEST COAST EAGLES: Midfield mix strange.
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Can win it.

Melican got a 3 week suspension. I saw a clip of the hit on Bedford, it was a hard hit, but it didn't look deliberate, just unfortunate. On the clip, a commentator said "Well done Bedford, you took one for the team!"
I think his eyesight has now returned, but he'll be sporting a shiner for a while, it's rough old game!

Tough start to tipping but great to see Jed going so well in his first season. Will Dockers home ground advantage pay off? That would be good and Pies fallible as shown last week.
Dockers by 8
Saints
Hawks
Swans but probably blown it by tipping them
Suns... very tight game I expect
Crows... again, tight in the local derby
Tigers but Eagles will have a chance as certainly improving
Cats... sorry Duke but can it be 4 in a row? Cats very hard to beat on their odd cigar shaped ground, simply no width.
Lions...great chance for fans to get wonderful atmosphere in Hobart. Bit chilly for them though.
Let me tidy this up Val,
Dockers by 8
Saints
Hawks
Swans
Suns
Crows
Tigers
Cats
Lions
I wonder how often the last 3 get tipped and consecutively?

I have been thinking, GWS has in the past dropped off mid season before, especially last season during the by rounds, then came out flying towards the end of the season....maybe this just one of those mid season lulls, and they'll bounce back in good time. As for this week, i feel you're right, they'll not win three in a row and get the hat trick against the Cats, but i hope it's close one.

Carlton Blues
Hawthorn Hawks
Sydney Swans
Gold Coast Suns
Adelaide Crows

A close game but those lousy Pies still finished on top. Boo! Sussex was right on the money with his tip of a 14 point margin so $8.00 is set aside for the Save The Bilby Fund. Well done!

Three very closely contested and exciting games today. It's Mothers Day here so I was out at dinner with my offspring and grandchildren and all of us were trying to keep abreast of the scores as either the lead kept changing or one team was making a late charge. Great results though!
