Hello everyone, this will be our discussion thread for chapters 1-4 of The Berry Pickers. This is the first 80 pages and is about one quarter of the book. Please leave your first impressions here and let us know your thoughts so far. I plan to read a quarter of the book each week, but please read at your own pace and don't forget to come back here and share your thoughts at the end of each section.

I read chapters 1-4 this week and found the book very compelling so far. I realize that this isn't a typical "mystery," but there are still lots of questions that I have. Plus, it will be interesting to watch the story play out. I am wondering how the abduction took place and who did it. I suspect that the law enforcement officer who responded either did it or knows who did.
It's hard to understand in this day and age why the parents of Norma didn't just tell her she was adopted. I think that back then adoption was a bit more hush-hush. Of course we know that she wasn't adopted, but that would certainly be a plausible story that they could tell her instead of faking a headache every time she has questions.

Linda Martin (lindajm) | 20 comments I have a feeling this wasn't a legal adoption! Maybe that is why they tried to conceal the adoption from Norma. And hmmm... I didn't think of the law enforcement officer as being a suspect. Maybe so!

Emily (emilyesears) | 27 comments I definitely think the police officer was involved. Norma’s “father” is a judge so presumably there’s some kind of connection there.

I think Norma’s “parents” probably think if they told her she was adopted it would make her ask even more questions. But I agree it would be simpler than having to lie all the time and remove all the photos in their house and whatnot.

I’m enjoying the book but yeah I wouldn’t call it a mystery really. I doubt there will be any big twists by the end but we’ll see.
