I think this is what they call tragic comedy or satire but for me it's best described as realism when you lay it bare.

To answer question #9 in the Reading Group Guide, Where'd You Go, Bernadette is, at its core, a story about a woman who disappears, both literally and figuratively. Were you able to relate to the book? How and why? Do you feel Bernadette's disappearance was unique, or do all women, in a sense, disappear into motherhood and marriage?

How, I was able to relate as an individual, a man and a husband. Why, in that I have witnessed my wife disappear into motherhood and less into marriage and I, myself have disappeared into my career and less into fatherhood but more so that space left between my career and everything else (my marriage, fatherhood, life). And so, I'm not sure, but for me, Bernadette's disappearance is not unique to her or married moms but really anyone that has built a life around themselves which is not solely centered around themselves.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12594 comments I love your words, "disappear into motherhood." What a great way to express that. I know that it happened to me, and I am sure it does to other mothers (And fathers).
