Hey everyone! Let's discuss what we're going to read together next. Any and all suggestions are welcome. What kind of book do you want to read this time around? Feel free to share any book or genre you're in the mood for. The discussion ends once we all agree on what to read.

Blue Ghost | 118 comments Something light, as we've already decided! Fiction or fantasy? I haven't read much fantasy, but it's a genre I've been wanting to get into.

Blue Ghost | 118 comments Ooo, actually, how about we pick (or try to) a book with likeable characters?

I like this idea. I think we can manage to find a fantasy book with likeable characters.

Ok. That sounds good. : )

Tiara | 19 comments I did some searching, and there's The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. I'm ngl I'm probably not the best person to suggest a book, but I decided to go ahead and do so anyways.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. I've already read that one. But I'd be happy to reread if you guys want to read it. I'm currently looking through my TBR list for suggestions.

Rachel | 7 comments I've been recommended before "The Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towels. I've been told it's very endearing and a lot of lovable characters. It's not a fantasy, but historical fiction.

message 9: by Blue Ghost (new)

Blue Ghost | 118 comments A Gentleman in Moscow is on the shelf at the bookstore I work at, so it's immediately available to me.

Looking at reviews it does seem to fit the "likeable characters" criteria well. Definitely going on to my TBR list if we don't read it this round.

I'm not wedded to the idea of a fantasy, and I'm totally fine if we decide on a different genre. These are the books that I dug up:

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (has been super popular recently, so some of you may have read it, but it should be available at most libraries)

Trickster's Choice by Tamore Pierce (who doesn't love strong female leads?)

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley (another well known book that should be easy to acquire)

Historical fiction isn’t something I'd normally read. But I'd be willing to give "A Gentleman in Moscow" a chance because why not.

"The House in the Cerulean Sea" catches my eye every time I see it and now it's been mentioned here too. Maybe it's a sign that I should give it try. Who knows?

My suggestions:
A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft. This one has a mystery plot.

For She Is Wrath by Emily Varga. When I read the description, the revenge aspect is what drew me to it. I'm not sure if that's something any of you would be interested in.

Whichever book we don't choose this time around, maybe we can circle back to them for another group read.

Let me know what you think.

Blue Ghost | 118 comments I really like the idea of coming back to some of these suggestions for future group reads! I'll give everything a gander and pick out the ones that most catch my eye.

message 12: by Blue Ghost (new)

Blue Ghost | 118 comments I do love the idea of a revenge story. That may be the one I'm leaning toward the most.

Also, I was thinking and it would be fun to read books outside of genres we normally read--I mean, that's one of my favorite parts of being in bookclubs! I've never read a romance before, but as you said: why not.

Same, I added it to my TBR.

I agree with this as well. That's why I was trying to find a cozy fantasy book when you brought up wanting a lighthearted fantasy with likeable characters. I can't remember the last time I read a cozy fantasy.

This is right up my alley. I love historical fiction. I'd love to read this next, but I do need to branch out from the genres I usually read.

Trickster's Choice and The Mists of Avalon caught my eye. I'd be down to read either of them as well.

Everyone has thrown out some good suggestions. It's hard to decide which to choose for our group read.

message 16: by Blue Ghost (new)

Blue Ghost | 118 comments I know, SO MANY CHOICES. It seems like all of us expressed interest in A Gentleman in Moscow.

Maybe that can be our second group read, and for the third we could pick one of the others--they're all a different genre--we suggested in this thread?

I'd have no problem with that.

Your suggestion was very cute and I appreciated it! It made me realize how depressing the usual kind of books I read are. I suppose I oughta read some happier things every once in awhile, haha.

Well, I'm glad to be of some help. Believe me, I do understand that. I'm working on leaving my comfort zone and reading genres I rarely read. I don't read a lot of books that are relaxing. The ones that are tend to be religious. I didn't think much about it till someone I know pointed out that I rarely recommend a book that isn't depressing or involves some sort of murder and/or conspiracy. I try to be more diverse for myself and for others lol.

If everyone agrees, we'll read A Gentleman in Moscow this time around. Also, how long would you guys like this group read to last? The same two weeks as before or longer?

message 21: by Blue Ghost (new)

Blue Ghost | 118 comments It's over 400 pages. I do have immediate access to it come Monday, but I'll ask for at least 3 weeks.

Well, this book has about 200 more pages than Sharp Objects. I think it'd be best to run it till the end of the month.

Ok great Thank you for responding. 🙂

I'll make a discussion thread for it tomorrow and we'll run it until the end of this month. Which is a little over three weeks.

Let me know if there are any concerns regarding the time frame.
