Jason Oliver | 3049 comments What TV shows are you currently watching? Sell us on the show.

Is there a connection to your reading in any way?

message 2: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15571 comments I don't watch much. And what I do watch have nothing to do with my reading - food competition shows like Tournament of Champions, The Amazing Race, Survivor, The Traitors.

Jason Oliver | 3049 comments I'm not a huge tv watcher anymore. All the tv shows I watch have been recommendations or books.

Shows I've watched recently and I'm behind on most.

Yellowstone series. I really liked 1883. I haven't watched the new season of 1923. I haven't watched the last season of Yellowstone. (I'd rather read)

Cobra Kia is a fun, nostalgic show. It just ended.

I go crazy over Silo. It is based off of Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey

And then Severance might be one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Your work life and your personal life are completely separated. At work you don't know anything about your personal life and outside of work, you know nothing about your work. The show is weird and awkward and confusing, but I love it. The show is accompanied with some reading material Severance - The Lexington Letter and The You You Are: A Spiritual Biography of You. I also read The Death of Ivan Ilych because it is referenced multiple times in the show.

I have a lot of shows I want to watch but would rather read, or am scared to watch because it might ruin a book I love like All the Light We Cannot See.

Holly R W | 3122 comments Right now, I'm watching escapist t.v. I'm watching "The West Wing" and thought I'd only see the first season. It's so good that I'm now starting season 5.

On occasion, I watch series connected with the books I read. I've watched and enjoyed: A Gentleman in Moscow, Lessons in Chemistry, Daisy Jones and the Six, and The Durrells in Corfu.

I loved the West Wing! I also liked News Room which was also created by Aaron Sorkin. I would love to find shows like these again,

TV triggers headaches, so I can’t watch for long (or I listen from the next room). My long time favorite is 60 Minutes. I miss watching The Voice. I liked Yellowstone, but I can’t commit to a series.

Severance sounds like something I would like.

message 6: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5762 comments My son keeps encouraging me to watch Severance, so maybe I'll get to it. I do have Apple TV. I canceled Netflix because we were hardly ever watching it.

I like historical dramas and mysteries on PBS, like Miss Scarlet and Miss Fisher or Poldark and Sanditon (based on books.) I haven't watched the current All Creatures Great and Small, but I watched the original years ago.

We have never owned more than one TV at a time. This is sometimes an issue because my husband likes to watch much more news than I do. And if I start watching a program, he will come in partway through and ask, "Who is that?", "What is happening?", etc.

message 7: by Rachel N. (new)

Rachel N. | 2244 comments I really don't watch much tv but I'm excited for the new season of The Amazing Race. I stopped watching it for awhile but have also been catching up on past seasons. I'm stalled a bit on season 28, the social media season (yawn). I love seeing all the different places they go.

The only other thing I'm currently watching is Reacher with my fiance. Since I just read The Killing Floor we decided to watch the series based on it.

message 8: by Theresa (last edited Mar 09, 2025 11:21AM) (new)

Theresa | 15571 comments @Rachel N - I'm loving the new season of TAR! Yes, some seasons are less enjoyable than others, but I really watch it mostly for the locations and travel side than the competitors. It's almost shocking how few teams I remember from past years and how rarely they are a winning team.

Even though I don't really watch many series any more (I am an old movie fan), I have certainly watched them in the past - Game of Thrones, Mad Men, early seasons of Homeland, Columbo, MASH, PBS series - I do have a list of ones to watch 'some day' - and Reacher is on that list!

LibraryCin | 11697 comments Jason wrote: "Cobra Kia is a fun, nostalgic show. It just ended. ..."

Loved Cobra Kai! But I only got to see the first two seasons before my brother stopped his subscription, and I don't subscribe to Netflix myself. I keep thinking maybe at some point I'll get a chance to finish watching it somehow.

message 10: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11697 comments I don't watch a lot. News, and more recently I've gotten into some of the political commentary shows on CBC News Network. I expect if I got CNN, I'd watch that, too. (I know, people have gone further and further away from news and politics, but I've been drawn in like a train wreck!).

I do have a few that I watch: Outlander, The Handmaid's Tale when they are airing. I watch a crime-type one called "Found" and there is a Canadian one I watch called "Family Law".

message 11: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12097 comments I enjoy watching tv in the evenings with my husband. I went from having very little to watch to now having a plethora. I now have more to watch than I can watch so recording and putting a few off until later:
Currently I'm watching or will soon watch.
Every weeknight- Jeopardy. Been watching it for years. I love it.
Series:
Reacher - I love this series. I read the first couple of books in the series a very long time ago.
1923 - Jason, you need to watch it. It is an excellent addition to the Yellowstone family.
Yellowstone-I'll be able to watch the last of it starting March 27.
Dark Winds - I've read a good number of Hillerman's Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee books. I really like how the series is done.
The Americas- I really like finding out about the animals of the Americas. Tom Hanks does an excellent job of narrating, but something about it puts me to sleep, so I can only watch an hour at a time.
Bosch or as the new series is called Bosch Legacy. - The series based on Michael Connelly's books is excellent. I've read any number of the Bosch books.

Reality/cooking shows:
Voice
Survivor
Next Level
Top Chef
Tournament of Champions(haven't started watching yet.)

message 12: by Theresa (last edited Mar 09, 2025 12:23PM) (new)

Theresa | 15571 comments BnB - another Next Level fan! And I think you all know I love Top Chef. Cooking competition shows - my main relaxation - and I watch them while eating dinner or just need an hour of television in the background while catching up on personal emails, doing some stitching, whatever else I'm doing to transition from work day.

I rarely watch anything live - I record then watch, zipping past the commercials and boring parts (I believe the extension of Survivor to 90 minutes was and remains unnecessary - I fast forward through much now.) Most of the reason I record is actually because I frequently have evening meetings related to work.

message 13: by Karin (last edited Mar 09, 2025 05:02PM) (new)

Karin | 9233 comments I just watched the first season of High Potential, which my eldest daughter watched as it aired (on Demand.) I don't know if I can sell you on it. It's another show where a brilliant person helps the police, but one of the twists from Monk and Psych, etc, is that the police are good at their jobs in this one. I tend to enjoy comedies like this. However, I'm likely to go back to not really watching anything again.

I have no idea if there's a real connection to any of my current reading, other than solving mysteries since I read some mysteries.

I can't think of the one or two books I thought would be great on screen if the writers/producers/directors could stay true to the book.

Does all TV trigger headaches (as in all your life?) I ask because some types of TV screens give me headaches, but not all. Plasma screens are a no-no. I can no longer remember the criteria I used to buy the one we have, which is too bad if it ever dies.

message 15: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4101 comments I watch very little TV (though we did binge watch Shōgun recently. Awesome though gruesome).

But my granddaughter has become charmed by (aka freaking *obsessed* with) Gabby’s Dollhouse recently. It’s a little young for her but everything is ‘catified’ so I get the appeal. And there are crafts and baking. Very wholesome if somewhat alarmingly perky. And she is developing an American accent. The main problem though is that I have had the theme tune with accompanying meowing going round my head ALL DAMN DAY

message 16: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments I watch very little TV. News, some food shows, some PBS series (usually on Sunday nights). With the move, I've gone days without turning the TV on at all.

message 17: by Rachel N. (new)

Rachel N. | 2244 comments @Kate, LOL. I don't have any young kids in my life at the moment so I don't know Gabby's Dollhouse but I feel your pain. When my oldest nephew was little he was obsessed with The Wiggles and I'd always get their songs stuck in my head. Just thinking about it now I have their fruit salad song in my head, argh.

Ha, ha, Americans have complained about their kids watching Peppa Pig and taking on a British accent!

My kids had a record (yes, it was still a thing) of songs by the Smurfs!

Amy | 12933 comments OMG! This could be my favorite thread!!!! I have so much to share, but as usual, I’m out of time. I didn’t even go on Goodreads last night, because I stayed up past midnight, finishing up my taxes, which is a 10 hour job! But first!!!!

Theresa is watching the traitors ???? That is like my favorite show and I’m totally obsessed!!! I could talk about it for days. I may have to message you privately and just squeal. I also scrolled through so quickly because I haven’t had time, but I can see that Theresa and Fran love next level, which I do as well. I just think that one is so clever. God, I have so much to say. Well for anyone who is bachelor fans, one of the four ladies left, actually is from my hometown of Newton, Massachusetts. And I rather think she’s the one who will get picked. In my mind, none of the others make sense, but you just know they never pick who I think they should. But I’m going with it that she wins. So there I am last Monday on my way to Zumba class, and my good friend Bruce called me to tell me that he’s going to a watch party at the American Italian Legion that night, and do I wanna come? His wife is my best friend, and their daughter is going as well. Who is home from UCONN. And the bachelorette is going to be there pretty much with her entire family and everyone who you saw in that yard.

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12933 comments Had to start again because my phone can only tolerate so much…. Anyway, I’m like in my Zumba clothes? So after the class, I’m like where the heck is the Italian American Legion and I can see I’m gonna get there somewhere between 810 and 815. Apparently it’s a packed roaring party there. And I said to my friend, just text me if her segment is on first, which of course is a one in four chance. Because I’ll never make it in time to watch it with you guys, so I’ll just turn around and go home. Halfway there, he tells me she’s first. So I didn’t go to the watch party. But he said that she is so cute and adorable. And that the family was incredible. He knows someone from the family. And of course we all here in this town loved watching the scenes of our town. Everyone was so authentic and wonderful and he sent me pictures of all of them with her. So that was fun. He says if there’s a watch party for the finale, I can come back. But she wouldn’t be there and especially if she wins she wouldn’t be there.

Anyway, I could tell you when I watch any night of the week. I’m gonna have to come back to this thread so I have more time but I just had to respond about the traitors immediately.

Theresa | 15571 comments @Amy - I have been waiting for you to comment, as I know you watch tv!

As for The Traitors, I am now working through UK Season 3!

message 22: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12933 comments Is it my last chance to talk TV? Lets get to it..... There are a lot of really terrible sitcoms these days. I find myself still taping them, but truth be told, I could care less if I never saw them.

In terms of my 9 and 10 o' clock dramas, I am actually really loving Matlock! I just think that show is so great. Its clever and interesting, and I got drawn in.

Big Lover of Survivor and Amazing Race, and this last Wednesdays episode (Theresa, where are you.......) was one of the BEST I have ever seen. Also really liked the TAR episode.... LOVE Next Level Chef. I am watching High Potential, the Rookie, the Irrational.

And then there is Netflix.... Is that another thread?

Cameron and I restarted the Flash, and were pretty into it. Its fun to re-watch it with him, given everything we already know....

message 23: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9233 comments I watched the first season of High Potential on demand--I enjoy comedies like this. One of the refreshing differences is that the police officers are smart and capable.

message 24: by Theresa (last edited Mar 15, 2025 09:49PM) (new)

Theresa | 15571 comments @Amy - I am behind on Survivor - really busy work week. But up to date on The Amazing Race. A new season of Top Chef started this week - I know there are other fans here.

What I wonder, Amy, is how you find time for all those shows AND all your reading!

Oh and thanks for the reminder on Matlock. A friend recommended it then I forgot. I mean, the sublime Kathy Bates!

There are really old shows that I loved and still find myself watching when I spot them: Columbo and MASH.

Have to agree with this. The only good one recently was Big Bang Theory. I do watch/tape the new "Night Court", but it's really not very good. It's just for the nostalgia of it, really (and the actress who played Bernadette in Big Bang is the new judge on Night Court - playing Harry's daughter (Harry was the original judge on Night Court).

We don't have access to Silo easily here but I did read Wool Omnibus. The whole series was fantastic so if it does become available I'd watch it for sure.

I used to love Survivor but as time has progressed the people on it have become nastier and nastier so I've gone off it. Love Masterchef and The Voice etc where people have a talent not based on lying and being horrid.

It's on Apple TV. That is where I watched it.

I am currently visiting Australia in the Compass Challenge. Reading In a Sunburned Country - Bill Bryson

I don't have apple tv. Enjoyed the books anyway and TV rarely lives up to the books.

I read Down Under (the same book but Aus/UK title) years/decades ago when I first moved here. Bill Bryson is brilliant, the way he looks at things is very refreshing.
