Sophie | 20 comments Hello everyone! I'm reading "Yellowface" at the moment. Have anyone of you already read it or even reading it at the moment?
Maybe we could share our thoughts here! ❤️📚

Kat ⋆.˚ ☾ .⭒˚ (katburgess) Yes, I've read it! So far it's my least favorite Kuang book though.

Sophie | 20 comments Josie, did you like it?
Kat why didn't you like it and what's your favorite Kuang book? (besides Yellowface I've read Babel last year)
Safiya what Do you think about it?

Yellowface lacks nuance needed for a topic like the publishing industry, especially when your MC is the racist one. It should've been a short story. Most of it felt like a really long twitter thread and a way for Kuang to dodge criticism she's faced over Poppy Wars. Her discussions about the book are way more interesting.

Babel 100%. Granted, I still haven't finished the Poppy Wars series, but I think Babel combines everything Kuang is good at: historical fiction, academic information, and hammering home her themes. It's one of the few dark academia books I actually like.

Safiya | 16 comments I agree with Kat; it should’ve been a short story. I understand what she is trying to but at almost 150 pages in, it feels very repetitive.

Sophie | 20 comments Safiya, I am now on page 210 and it's getting very exciting now. (about @athenaliusghost)

Sophie | 20 comments "hammering home her themes" - Kat, you brought the Kuang's talent to the point! But for me, I think she's absolutely doing that with Yellowface.
Babel was very good, but for me "just" a 3.5 ⭐️ book.

Arielle Miller | 25 comments It's on my to-read list... heard mixed things about it, but very interested!

Safiya | 16 comments Ok that’s good. I’ll keep reading 🤭

ˋ°•☆&;josie.ೃ࿐ (readingwithjosie) | 111 comments personally did not enjoy this one! I loved the Poppy War series but I felt like this was super repetitive and boring! I kept waiting for a reveal or something to redeem it but it just stays preachy and the main character is a total douche the entire time

message 15: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 20 comments though I don't think Yellowface will be one of my favorite novels as well, I like how it captures the mc's thoughts. Besides the content about the publishing world, it's psychologically very interesting in my opinion

ˋ°•☆&;josie.ೃ࿐ (readingwithjosie) | 111 comments @Sophie I actually agree, it is a psychologically interesting POV as a depiction of narcissism. The concept is not the worst, and obviously, the message itself is relevant, but the delivery is just not well done imo.

Someone else in this feed said it should have been a short story or novella, and I agree with this. It's so heavy-handed and really dragged on.

Basically, this was just a 3 star read for me. It was fine, but nothing special and ultimately kind of disappointing. Over hyped.

Jackie (goodreadscomrumbelle517) | 56 comments I thought that maybe Kuang wrote so it read like a Twitter feed as a way to express how repetitive those feeds could be.

Sophie | 20 comments Hey that's a good point!

Viktoria (foraoisefae) | 2 comments Hi! I just finished Yellowface last week. It was my first Kuang book and so different from what i usually read. But i have to say i enjoyed it, even though i was annoyed most of the time due to the protagonist haha. I'd recommend the book to others!
