That must have been a great surprise!

Yes! You can choose to read for them or not; if you read for the ally, you get bonus points but no penalty if you don't read for them. It's the reverse for enemies. You lose bonus points if you choose not to read for the enemy. Hope that makes sense!

i'm pretty sure it's for any books that you finish reading that don't fit a current task description. you would put a book in the banked sheet and leave it there until you can use it for a task
Welcome to the first week, adventurers! You begin your quest in EREBOR, the Lonely Mountain. This ancient dwarven holding was taken over by the dragon Smaug and re-claimed by Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins, and a battle of five armies. As you walk about this legendary location, you encounter your first ALLY a strange but powerful group of GREAT EAGLES

The cost to join with this ally is 200 pages. If you read the pages to accept the eagles' help you will earn a spin from the random wheel to win bonus points! There is no penalty if you choose not to read for this ally.

it's been a while since I've done a week by week challenge, so not sure the best way to go about. along for the ride though :)

Also when I write my reviews for each book I read it says to post the link. Not sure where a review link is. And do you copy & paste it?

to read for the ally of the eagles, someone has to read a book with at least 200 pages, i think. but their book cannot be used for another task after that.
the review link that you have to post is a copy and pasted url from when you are looking at your specific book review.

that makes sense to me since we don't have to supply a book for every task. maybe we decide near the end of the week who wants to post for ally/enemy?

i'm going to read Once Upon a Broken Heart for the BR too, but probably next week :)

Yeah or if someone ends up reading a book that is the perfect amount of pages (like if someone reads a book with 207 pages this week), then they can go ahead and post it if they want.
As a side note, we can use multiple books for the enemy/ally if we need to!

I like this plan! I likely won't post my read books till Sunday :)

do we get multiple attempts at the bonus if we read more than 1 for ally?

If you complete the ally you get a bonus no matter what - I have a randomizer wheel that I spin to decide the bonus points. All you have to do is complete the ally and then I'll spin it and let you know how many points you got!

Also we have so many members, but I see only a few adding books. Is everyone here?

Hi Kai! Just a reminder that the spreadsheet is informal. It's used so you can see the tasks and communicate with your teammates, but posting in the review thread is what will actually count your books for points. There are already examples in the review thread you can follow, but if you need additional help with that you're welcome to shoot me a message or ask in the Q&A!

Taffy is supposed to be in your group but hasn't yet checked in - I'll send her a reminder message!

Congratulations adventurers! You have successfully navigated your way out of EREBOR and begun your journey to MOUNT DOOM. You head straight south, skirting the edges of Mirkwood Forest to arrive at OSGILIATH. Once a city of men, Osgiliath has slowly fallen to the forces of Sauron and stands as an ever-present threat to nearby MINAS TIRITH. You hope to gain some information from the soldiers here, or perhaps simply to win some glory in battle.

As you traverse this decrepit city you encounter your first ENEMY, a little crawling thing in the shadows called GOLLUM

The cost to defeat this enemy is 250 pages. If you do not read for this enemy, you will cause a spin on the wheel to determine penalty points and will lose that many points. There is no bonus for completing this enemy.

Also, I know there are some new folks on this team who haven't quite figured out the challenge system yet - it's a lot to sort through if you're unfamiliar! I see a fair number of books on your SS for week 1 that were never posted on the review thread. If you post those books sometime today or tomorrow I will still accept them for points! But that grace period is only for this first week - after this please have all books for each week posted before the cutoff date listed in the SS.
(Final post for today, lol, sorry for all this at once)
Congratulations adventurers! Through acts of magic and gallantry, you have allied yourselves with the GREAT EAGLES.

The eagles' assistance has granted you 20 bonus points! These points have now been added to your points from last week.

Today's the last day to do it for week 1 especially since Saige has been so kind and is letting us post them late!
Planning on posting them this evening if no one objects :)

Sure, please do. At least for mine, but I thought I posted them all I could find a task for. I’m on holiday several times in april and may, so I’ll post my tasks more grouped. I don’t have stable internet all the time.

I'm so sorry I missed week one
