I know i found this so soon after I posted but I have been looking for so long and finally posted as a last resort, and then happened upon the book right after

i believe the main character spends the entire book trying to figure out who killed her best friend, and at the end it is revealed to have been suicide. she killed herself so her parents wouldn’t have to choose between paying for her college or for her brother’s care/a surgery
