Dirk Van | 4535 comments Every month I choose a theme and try to post as many different artists as there are days.
I won't reveal at first what the theme is, so the first days it's a bit of a guessing game. But I think it will not be too difficult.
You are welcome to comment on the pictures posted, or on other people's comments, you can say whatever you want (keeping with the rules of the group of course).
The only rule to this thread is that the person running this thread can post a picture here.
So please don't post a picture in this thread. That's all!
Enjoy!

Dirk Van | 4535 comments Henri Rousseau
(1844 - 1910)

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau was a French post-impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner. He was also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer), a humorous description of his occupation as a toll and tax collector. He started painting seriously in his early forties; by age 49, he retired from his job to work on his art full-time.
Ridiculed during his lifetime by critics, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality. Rousseau's work exerted an extensive influence on several generations of avant-garde artists.

Dirk Van | 4535 comments Willem van Mieris
(1662– 1747)

Willem van Mieris was a painter, sculptor and etcher active in Leiden. He was born in Leiden and studied under his father Frans van Mieris the Elder (1635–1682), who was a successful genre painter. Willem had a reasonably successful career, being supported by a few patrons who commissioned and collected various of his works. His oeuvre consists mostly of genre and portraiture, with some landscape painting, as well as some sculptures. Van Mieris' style was that of the fijnschilders (painters in the "fine manner"), and his genre works, especially later in his career, depicted scenes from upper-class society.

Dirk Van | 4535 comments Rupert Bunny
(1864 - 1947)

Rupert Charles Wulsten Bunny was an Australian painter. Born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, he achieved success and critical acclaim as an expatriate in fin-de-siècle Paris. He gained an honourable mention at the Paris Salon of 1890 with his painting Tritons and a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 with his Burial of St Catherine of Alexandria. The French state acquired 13 of his works for the Musée du Luxembourg and regional collections. He was a "sumptuous colourist and splendidly erudite painter of ideal themes, and the creator of the most ambitious Salon paintings produced by an Australian."

Frederic Leighton, 1st Baron Leighton, PRA, known as Sir Frederic Leighton between 1878 and 1896, was a British Victorian painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. His works depicted historical, biblical, and classical subject matter in an academic style. His paintings were enormously popular and expensive, during his lifetime, but fell out of critical favour for many decades in the early 20th century.

Dirk Van | 4535 comments Peter Paul Rubens
(1577–1640)

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat. He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens' highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasised movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.

The artist's uses spatial distortions with color and subject matter.

This makes what should be a peaceful scene cause a visual conflict that might be disturbing.

E | 73 comments The painting reflects the ethereal fleeting reflection of a young woman. perhaps her thoughts in drifting between dreaming and fully awakening.

Eva Gonzales is considered part of the impressionist movement style.

In reading how Eva's life was cut short in childbirth at the age of 34, it is a tragic event.

It was a time when so many women perished having children. So many events could cause this.

Unbelievably in 1883, there were still some surgeons and physicians that did not wash their hands or thoroughly sterilize their equipment.

Diego Rivera was a Mexican painter. His large frescoes helped establish the mural movement in Mexican and international art. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals in, among other places, Mexico City, Chapingo, and Cuernavaca, Mexico; and San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City. In 1931, a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, New York. That was before he completed his 27-mural series known as Detroit Industry Murals.

He was also friends with Pablo Picasso, although they had a falling out over a dispute in technique.

Diego Riveras attraction to Frida Kahlo, who was also a great artist, was a historic love at first sight.
She died too soon at the age of 47.
