This 12th book in The Chronicles of St Mary's time travel series was to be my final read; however, she added two additional stories with speculation of one more. Max, time traveling historian for St. Mary's Institute, often exclaims, "Everything was absolutely fine, until it wasn't...," which often becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.
When Capt Hyssop becomes head of security, she and Max get off on a bad start, especially when her actions results in two historians being abandoned in Babylonia, 565 B.C. When the director of St. Mary's and Max's friend, Dr. Bairstow, is missing and presumed dead, a new director is hired who becomes a thorn in Max's side. When Max fails to follow his orders, she is sacked for the second time, only to be hired by temporal bounty hunters employed track fugitives in time, capture them, and turn them over to the Time Police.
I have found this series an enjoyable light read after reading heavier works. Although it has its dramatic moments, these are often interlaced with humor. And what an entertaining way to learn history, which I have found to be accurate. Although you can read this book as a standalone, the reader will better appreciate the growth of Dr. Maxwell's character by reading this series from the beginning.
