3rd Quarterly - Scrabble!
Rules:
Each team will be given 10 letters at the start of the challenge. You must read one book for each letter before you can use them to spell a word. You can read for a letter by doing any of the following:
1. Title begins with the letter (includes “a” and “the”)
2. Letter in author’s initials
3. Series title ends with the letter
4. MC’s first or last name begins with the letter
5. Publisher name ends with the letter
For example,
would work for:
T (first letter of title)
D or A (Author’s initials)
Y (last letter of the series title)
A or D (MC’s initials)
S (last letter of publisher’s name)
Once your team has completed all 10 letters, you may “place” those letters on the board (in your SS) to spell a word. Be strategic about where you place the letters to maximize bonus points! Once you spell a word, message the review thread (example below) Don’t just put the letters in your SS. A mod will look over your word, count up any bonus points, and give you new letters to replace the ones you used. Letters not used for one word will remain available until you use them, no need to read for them twice. Once your scrabble board fills up and no more moves are possible, your letters and board will be reset.
Bonus points are determined by the number value of each letter, just like in the boardgame. Those values are:
1 - A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U
2 - D, G
3 - B, C, M, P
4 - F, H, V, W, Y
5 - K
8 - J, X
10 - Q, Z

10 - Q, Z
Example:
Your team is given the letters I, H, O, N, D, I, N, S, G, Z. You read one book for each letter and then spell the word HIDING. You place this word on the board in location H8-M8. The total word is worth H (4) + I (1) + D (2) + I (1) + N(1) + G (2) =11. The letter N gets a double letter score because of its placement on the board, so this word in this location would earn 12 bonus points.

To play a word, post in the review thread like this:
Word: HIDING
Location: H8-M8
After you play the word HIDING, you still have the letters O, N, S, and Z. You will get six new letters, bringing the total back to 10. If you choose to spell a new word using the original O, N, S, and Z you do not need to read any books before placing those letters.
Mods will modify the Scrabble board in your SS to show the words you’ve already placed, so keep in mind that you can play one word with the goal of building from it later. You will have no opponent, like in usual Scrabble, you’ll just be playing to spell the most words/get the most bonuses.

Excited to have you playing! How many books do you plan to read per month?

Sorry, Saige, I forgot that part lol. Thank you for being so welcoming :) I'll say 10-15 a month? Sorry it's so vague; I really have no idea - advance apologies to my team if I'm all over the shop...

I'm happy to play with anyone but I'd love to be with Janeylou and Amanda if possible.
I can do 10 books per month.

If that puts our BPM too high, I don't mind having mine capped, and I'm sure Amanda won't either.

I've just written up the teams (will be posted later today) and it looks like that won't be necessary, but thank you. Btw, DeeNeez never signed up for this challenge, but you mentioned wanting to be on a team with them. Do you want to message them and double-check if they'd like to play this one?

This is just a wild guess, but I'll say I'm in for 10 bpm. And I'm happy to be on any team!

Welcome to the 3rd team quarterly challenge! This quarter, you’ll be competing to become the Challenge Corner Spelling Bee Champions. Each team will get a series of letters with which to spell the longest word possible, with opportunities for double letter, triple letter, double word, and triple word bonuses just like in the boardgame.
To join, please sign up below by telling me how many books you plan to read per month. You will not be penalized for going over or under this number, it’s just used to make teams. Also, if there are other players you would especially like to play with, please ask! We will do our best to accommodate teammate requests.
*Books must be completed and reviewed from July 1st to September 30th. You can include a book started before July but must read at least 100 pages during the challenge to count. Winners will be announced on October 1st, 2025.
The general challenge rules can be found here
Graphic novels can be counted toward categories if they are at least 100 pages after dividing the most rated page count by 4. You can combine graphic novels to hit the page count minimum.
*Page Points:
<50 pages = .25 points
51 - 99 pages = .5 points
^^^ these books will only count for page points
100 - 149 pages = 1 point
150 - 249 pages = 2 points
250 - 349 pages = 3 points
350 - 449 pages = 4 points
450 - 549 pages = 5 points
550 - 649 pages = 6 points
650 - 749 pages = 7 points
750 - 849 pages = 8 points
850 - 949 pages = 9 points
950+ = 10 points
*Buddy read points will double the page count.
**Reading and participating in the group book of the month will triple the page count
