Robert Zwilling | 2913 comments Rats are usually maligned by people. Here is an article about rats that are finding mines in Thailand. One particular rat, Ronin, has located over 100 mines, plus other unexploded bombs. The rat's weight isn't heavy enough to set off a land mine. A rat can identify mine locations in a tennis court size area in 30 minutes. It would take a person 4 days to check the same size area.

"Apopo, which is based in Tanzania, currently has 104 rodent recruits able to sniff out mines, or HeroRATS, as the non-profit likes to call them.

After extensive training and cost, the rats are able to sniff out chemicals that are found in landmines and other weapons abandoned on battlefields. The rats can also be trained to detect tuberculosis.

They are working in several countries. Cleaning up mines is tedious and expensive. The cost to clean up Ukraine is around 1.5 billion dollars.
