Diana | 2 comments More than 20 years ago, I read a fiction series about a young nomadic girl/woman set in I want to say either Saharan Africa or the Middle East. I want to read it again, but I can't remember the title or the author.

Things I remember about the series:
- The main character starts out as a young teen entering puberty. When her cycle starts, she hides it from her parents because she doesn't want to be considered of marrying age yet.
- They live in the desert, and as such they have to conserve their water. The main character mentions being able to bathe using just a single cup of water.
- She ends up married off to a much older man who already has at least one wife. When he shows up is when we get the first signs that the story is modern or modern-ish (he has a Jeep).
- She has a daughter, and then takes steps to make sure she can't conceive again. Her daughter is her pride and joy.
- She doesn't like the luxury of her husband's home. The bath towels are too soft and barely absorb water - she misses the harsh, absorbent towels of her childhood.
- The main character's name maybe started with a B?
- I was a teenager when I read the series back in the 90s, so it might have been YA fiction?

I know this isn't a lot to go on, but if anyone knows the book series I'm talking about, please let me know!

Google Books preview of Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind by Suzanne Fisher Staples (also called "Daughter of the Wind") - Becca's suggestion:
- There are different cover images.
