Losing Earth: A Recent History by Nathaniel Rich is a gripping and eye-opening account of a crucial decade—1979 to 1989—when humanity came remarkably close to tackling climate change. Through compelling narrative and meticulous research, Rich reveals how scientists, campaigners, and even key political figures understood the dangers of global warming and nearly succeeded in forging a solution. But despite clear warnings and growing consensus, the opportunity was lost. Part history, part cautionary tale, this book reads like a political thriller—only it’s all true. Urgent, thought-provoking, and deeply human, Losing Earth is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how we ended up here—and how much we still stand to lose.

An excellent summary of recent political history, when the US was poised to be a global leader in reducing CO2 emissions, and failed- largely due to a George W Bush pro-oil advisor.
