Sometimes there are incidents where, if a book is not available on Kindle, people will convert a PDF scan of the book to text in order to upload a bootleg Kindle edition without the copyright holder’s permission so they can make money off people who are looking for a Kindle edition of the book. In the past I have asked Jaclyn about what to do in the case of bootleg Kindle editions, and she responded that she and Staff confirmed that they should be invalidated: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

For whatever reason, the novel A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. does not have a Kindle edition in the US. As such, many people in the US have created bootleg Kindle editions of it. All of the following editions are bootleg Kindle editions and need to be invalidated as per Jaclyn’s instructions. Aside from Canticle never receiving a US Kindle, you can also tell that these are bootlegs by the lack of a publisher, publication dates that don’t match up to any other edition, and all of the cover art either being low-quality, AI generated, and/or stolen from other editions of the book.

It might also be worth putting a librarian note somewhere on the book to explain that none of these should be re-validated due to their status as illegitimate Kindle editions.

Does this require a superlibrarian? I randomly sampled one and it had no shelves at all.

The first edition I linked has been shelved over 400 times, so a lot of them do.

If you want me to go through and figure out which ones can be removed from this thread and moved to a new non-superlibrarian thread, let me know and I'll do so.

Thanks so much for your help! I'm probably going to start a thread asking Jaclyn if there's any way to block automatic Kindle imports on a specific book. I can think of a couple more where these bootleg Kindle editions are/have been a problem before (The Power Broker by Robert Caro, The Sluts by Dennis Cooper).
