And here I go, shamelessly cribbing off Nancy: Please nominate any mystery/crime/thriller/true crime etc. written by an author whose last name begins with B.

A) You may NOT nominate your own book
B) Please make sure we haven't read your nomination in the last two years by checking the group bookshelf (https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...)
C) If your book wins the poll, you are the discussion leader.

(I even cribbed her August message!)

CBRetriever | 2556 comments I nominate Death in Brittany by Jean-Luc Bannalec.

introduces readers to the enigmatic Commissaire Dupin, an idiosyncratic penguin lover and Parisian-born caffeine junkie whose unique methods of detection raise more than a few eyebrows. It is a book so atmospheric readers will immediately want to wander through the village’s narrow alleyways, breathe in the Atlantic air and savour Brittany’s seaside specialty dishes.

Valerie Book Valkyrie | 659 comments Here's a nomination for Quite Ugly One Morning by Christopher Brookmyre :

The story introduces Brookmyre's signature protagonist, the hard-partying, wisecracking investigative journalist Jack Parlabane, who is not afraid to bend the laws of the land (or even the laws of gravity) to get to the truth. Parlabane is nursing a horrific hangover when he stumbles across the corpse of the scion of a wealthy Edinburgh medical family. Determined to get to the bottom of the murder himself, he quickly becomes enmeshed in a wild adventure that will take him through all the strata of Edinburgh society and into some dangerous (and hysterical) situations.
Laced with acerbic wit and crackling dialogue, Quite Ugly One Morning is a wickedly entertaining and vivacious thriller.

Thanks to the folks who made nominations, and to the folks who reminded everyone of the criteria.

Nominations are over and I hope to have a poll up by end of day.

By the way, Julie, I'm not inclined to add a book that doesn't come out until after we're already scheduled to be reading. I'm sure there are a lot of readers here chomping at the bit to read it, but not all of them would want to buy it in hardcover, and there would be added difficulty getting a loan from a library because I expect any Dan Brown book has a boat-load of holds on it before it shows up at the library.

Sorry.

Well, darn. I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner, Debbie. If you're looking at the webpage for the group, though, you can get to that page using the "Bookshelf" link at the top of the page.

and a lot of us prefer to wait until the paperback comes out which means that the digital price will go down as well.

Elizabeth (Alaska) This will be my first group read in the group. How does it work? Do members read at their own pace? Do you have a spoiler thread and a non-spoiler thread?

AND, do people talk in this thread about the polls and votes and such?

Hi, Elizabeth, and welcome.

Once the poll determines winners -- we have discussion threads for the two books with the most votes -- near the beginning of the month we set up both a non-spoiler and spoiler thread for each. The nominator of the book runs the discussion and, yes, everyone goes at their own pace. Having the two threads helps with that, I think. (Though, I suppose a discussion leader could suggest reading along at a certain pace, like a chapter a day, and see how that goes.)

If you want to see how past discussions have worked out, check here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thanks, Randy. And good to know there are two group reads each month.
