Welcome to Shifting Shores, a new Warriors roleplay! In this topic, you can find a brief explanation on how roleplaying (or rping) works here on Goodreads if you’re new or a little rusty. We try to keep things neat and organized, so we have specific folders for character creation (The Nursery), roleplay and relationship requests (The Clearing), and character threads (Silverpelt), as well as many others. Generally, you will want to read through the lore, claim a character, create said character, then start rping. Below, you will find more specific instructions on what that means and where to go!

In a roleplay group here on Goodreads, “claiming a character” means you’re reserving a specific character to create in the group’s plot. Usually, a group will have a list of available characters or a thread where users can post which characters are up for grabs. To claim one, you just see which ones are not claimed (they won’t have a user’s name beside them) and choose from those. In this group, you will want to go to Cat Claims to claim your characters.

After that, we move on to a character sheet or template. These are how we get to know your character, detailing their basic information, appearance, personality, and history! To make sure everything lines up and fits with the group, when you’ve completed your character, you need to copy their template you’ve made and post it in the corresponding Clan topic. For example, if you make a SeaClan cat, post them in the SeaClan Creation thread. Once your character is approved by moderators—check for new posts later in the day in the topic you posted the character in for a moderator comment—you’re free to use them in roleplay!

Now let’s get into how roleplaying works in general. If you’re struggling with writing a history for your character or are unsure of how they’d have grown up, this roleplay guide also helps with that.

We have a rule in this group that each rp post must be at least a complete paragraph. It doesn’t need to be 500 words or a novella, just a few sentences that are more than just “He roared. He walked forward. He sat down.”. We want you to write enough for your partner to have something solid to respond to. Try to include thoughts, actions, and words! The more detail you can give to an rp partner, the more they will be able to give back to you.

A character’s history depends on their age and experience as a Clan member. How old was your character when they moved up from being an apprentice, found their niche in the Clan, and made a name for themselves? What is their specific role in the Clan? Is there anything they’re particularly good or bad at? You can build in intricacies involving the character’s relationship to both their Clan and the other Clans on the island.

An interesting and well-rounded character will have both strengths and weaknesses. Be sure to consider both a character’s skills and their weak points while you are creating and roleplaying a character. For example, maybe a warrior is a strong fighter but they are too brash and run into more fights than is strictly necessary. Maybe your character is very weak in terms of brute force, but they are incredibly fast and agile.

The first thing to keep in mind when roleplaying in this group is that the roleplay will be conducted using characters of your own creation, and written in third person using complete sentences. Your character must be submitted and approved before you can do so, however.

If a topic has been inactive with no roleplay posts for one week, it is then considered open for a new roleplay to begin within. Please ask before starting a roleplay in a topic if you are unsure of its current activity status. If a topic already has no roleplay posts, it is also considered open.
