Shay Oliver | 2 comments My memory may be wrong but I remember reading this story in an English/LA textbook around 1996 maybe in second grade. I would either have been in school in Columbia SC or Lake City Ga. My memory says the textbook was predominantly red.

The story again, was a small boy (the smallest and weakest boy) lined up before the dragon eggs and it was the smallest egg that hatched for him and it ended up being a super rare/ powerful dragon. And there was something about having to climb down a hill or something.

I know this is very similar to dragon riders of pern, but when I read that book (hoping to find this story), it wasn’t exactly the same because the dragon was small too.

Thanks for anyone who takes time on this, I know it’s a long shot.

Sue Elleker | 1050 comments The Smllest Dragon Boy by Anne McCaffrey? The boy has broken his leg, and can't attend the hatching. \he makes it there anyway, and impresses a bronze.

That's what I thought when I read it. But the inquirer claims this story she read was an excerpt or short story of some kind.

I have found memories of the Pern series in general and Jaxom's bond with his dragon Ruth in particular. I think they were the first stories I ever read about humans bonding with dragons and having loving, working relationships with them.

Shay Oliver | 2 comments Omg!!! Thank you Sue. This was the story. I literally teared up reading it.
I cannot thank you enough. This story started my love of dragons and was the first fantasy story I fell in love with. That is a 20 year old mystery solved and I am incredibly grateful!
