Allison Kielhold | 5 comments I am not sure when I read but was at least prior to 2020. Plot is wealthy man has a reserve where he has brought back prehistoric mammals (sloths?) and there is an additional plot to release prehistoric animals that were once forzen in the arctic. A woman (park ranger?) is brough on a team to investigate. I am not sure of the other characters but she is thrown into to "arena" with the giant sloths once she is aware of the ecoterrorist plot. The villan's child falls in the "arena" and she saves him/her from the sloth. And the ecoterrorist/villan/rich guy spares her because she helped save his child.

I do not think so because that came out in 2024. I remember a plot to release prehistoric animals in the arctic that were found due to global warming and I do not think "Extinction" has that in the story line.

Alan (alanjc) | 478 comments I think mammoths might be more likely than sloths. (Sloths aren't extinct, sleep 20+ hours a day, are the size of a small dog and move very slowly, so no one is going to be savaged by one in an arena).

Working on this assumption, Mammoth by John Varley looks like a possibility.
