Rik | 777 comments I haven't been this excited over a trailer since the Fellowship of the Ring trailer some 15 years ago. Every single moment of this new Star Wars trailer makes me giddy and was pure perfection. I know JJ Abrams has his haters but I think he's the best thing to have happened to Star Trek since Riker ordered the Enterprise to fire on Locutus / Picard and the Borg. I'm extremely hopeful for this new movie and that Abrams will do for it what he did for Star Trek.

Trike | 11210 comments I'm the opposite of excited.

I can't help but notice that the trailer for JJ Abrams' Star Wars looks nearly identical to the trailer for JJ Abrams' Star Trek. Coincidence... or conspiracy?

Rik | 777 comments Who cares as long as its awesome? Both of Abrams Star Trek movies were better than every other Star Trek movie combined (even Wrath of Khan).

Stars Wars needs a kick in the *** after the way Lucas drove it into the ground from Jedi on much like Star Trek needed a kick in the *** after every movie from Khan on. I didn't hate every ST movie after Khan but even the best of them (First Contact) were basically only a good TV episode rather than a great movie.

Rick Abram's Trek was OK but verged on losing what makes Trek, Trek - a sense of hope, exploration and wonder, not action. Take Trek too far to the space battle, good vs evil side and you have generic space SF. Nothing wrong with that, but Star Trek is still a topic of conversation 50 year after it first aired because of the complexities it addresses beyond the generic space SF motif.

Star Wars can explore some interesting territory now... yeah the rebels won in Return... but it's never as clean as that and the empire won't just fade away gracefully... what stories fall out of that? If it's just space opera 101... meh. I have to admit, though, hearing Ford's "Chewie, we're home" line got to me...

Alexander (technogoth) | 171 comments I loved seeing the crashed star destroyer in the background, and am looking forward to the movie. It'll probably be terrible but I still want to see it. I do wish they had just left out the original cast.

JJ has done some good things but the 2nd startrek movie was not one of them. I still wish that the whole movie was like the scene after the opening were its rainy and grey and Kahn convince a man to blow up section 31 in exchange for saving his daughters life.

Trike | 11210 comments The Force Awakens... from its nap and yells at the younglings to get off its damn lawn.

When Ford says, "Chewie... we're home," I think he means the rest home. He's pretty excited about the possibility of pudding.

Honestly, SW:TFA looks like Terminator: Genisys in that it's going to be a fanwank remixing their favorite bits from previous movies. That can either result in something decent like a Scorsese or Tarantino movie, or it can go horribly awry like Alien Versus Predator: Requiem. Personally, I'm going to bet the latter on this one. I have hated everything JJ Abrams has made, even when I wasn't aware he was involved, like Alcatraz. There's just something about his projects that rub me the wrong way, no matter ow tangentially involved he is.

Daran | 599 comments I am excited for this largely because of the original cast being in it. Mark Hamil's Luke Skywalker was my hero growing up. They need to transition from the classic heroes and villains of the Original Trilogy to a new group that can continue the story onward. That is the metric by which these next few movies will succeed or fail.

Last night, I made a custom Windows theme based on screenshots of the trailer. I haven't done anything that fannish in 20 years.

Trike | 11210 comments I suspect the original cast is going to be in it a lot less than people hope. The younger cast were on set for months, while the originals were there for a couple weeks.

I kind of think Han and Chewie won't show up until late in the movie. But that could be because I get a definite, "We took a wrong turn and got lost In space for 37 years," vibe from that. Probably because Han has always confused distance with time.

The 15 year old me who was there when Star Wars opened in 1977 wants to see them, but I hope they only have short cameos. That's all I need and want of the old cast. There can't be enough R2D2 for me :-)

This needs to appeal to the kids of today and make new heroes.
Like Jar Jar Binks was for the 2nd trilogy ;-) (j/k) :-P

"Wow, I haven't seen you guys in over twelve parsecs!"

My guess is that you're right. I'm guessing that Luke will play an Uncle Ben role, and Han, Chewie and Leia will help the new guys find him. And I'm fine with that, irt would be a good transition.
