Robert, if you enjoy Miller's The Song of Achilles, I strongly recommend Ransom byDavid Malouf. It tells the story of Priam's journey to retrieve his son's desecrated body from Achilles. It's a great novel.

Mia (apaperbackgirl) I just finished American Gods and started Anansi Boys !!!!
Neil Gaiman has written some really amazing books (I very highly recommend Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch that Neil Gaiman wrote with the late Terry Pratchett)!!!!
Eventually, though, I'll have to find another author/book/series to obsess over... Any suggestions?

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I can't suggest a series, but in addition to Ransom that I mentioned above, I recommend Bright Air Black by David Vann. It's a re-telling of the story of Medea. It is absolutely amazing.

I've posted reviews of both books and several other re-tellings of myths on my website at www.tamaraaghajaffar.com

You might want to browse through that and see what appeals to you.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, a contemporary retelling of the story of Antigone. In spite of some flaws, I thought it was interesting to see how she wove the story of Antigone into her narrative. I gave it four stars.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished Orfeo by Richard Powers. I have mixed feelings about it. I thought it was an ambitious book, loosely based on the myth of Orpheus.
Because it is saturated with references to musical compositions and the ins and outs of a musical piece, one really needs to have some background in musical theory to fully appreciate it.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I read a new translation of Beowulf. This one is by Stephen Mitchell whose translation of Gilgamesh: A New English Version I loved. I enjoyed his Beowulf since he captures the spirit, essence, and tone of the original.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished War Music: An Account of Homer's Iliad by Christopher Logue. This is definitely not a re-telling. It is more of a creative reimagining of Homer's The Iliad with dazzling poetry, humor, modern references, and dialog that sizzles. I thought it was amazing. I'd never heard of it before until someone mentioned it in another goodreads group.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic by Daniel Mendelsohn. It is a brilliant combination of critical analysis of Homer's Odyssey, a family memoir, and a travelogue.

In the process of conducting a seminar on Homer's Odyssey, Mendelsohn interrogates his own relationship with his father. I thought it was an amazing book and gave it 5 stars.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I read The Watch by Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya. Based on the Antigone story, it takes place at an isolated American outpost in Afghanistan. It is a very powerful novel but may not be for everyone because of its gut-wrenching intensity.
