Tamara Agha-Jaffar I read The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. The setting is pre-Saxon England with mythical creatures, knights, pixies, good monks and bad monks, ogres, and a dragon. The area is surrounded by a mist that causes personal and collective memory loss. Against this backdrop, Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple, set off on a quest for find their son.
The novel is not really about pre-Saxon England. I think it is a meditation on memory--its efficacy, and the role it plays to foster or impede reconciliation on a personal and/or collective level.
An amazing novel.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished Circe by Madeline Miller. I found the portrayal of Circe disappointing and unlike the Circe of the Odyssey.

I thought it was just going to be dumb romance, but I was pleasantly surprised when it actually had plot, characters to fall in love with...and some romance, lol.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar Finished Till we have Faces by C.S. Lewis. Lewis uses the myth of Cupid and Psyche as a vehicle to explore human love and love for the divine. Can be read as an allegory.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley. Very loosely based on Beowulf, it takes place in and around a gated community.
I had some issues with the constant shifts, but the novel is compelling and raises some interesting questions.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker. It is a retelling of the Iliad mostly in the voice of Briseis, Achilles' concubine. I thought Part 1 was very strong, but Parts 2 and 3 were pretty much a basic retelling of the events in the epic.
