I agree. Most of the movie cast was fine and they even got Clary and Jocelyn to look similar! The only one I really had a problem with was Isabelle, she wasn't at all like she was described in the books.

message 105: by Emma (new)

Emma I did not like the movie at all... I thought it didn't match the books. I'm really hoping this tv series will be better. Although some of the characters were okay, I'm glad they changed all the cast because they're getting a do-over. I have high hopes for this show... Please don't let me down directors!

Cate | 354 comments Once I read the series ( I already have the first two books!!!) I am going to dive into the movie and compare. I really don't like the idea of a TV show though.

Aw, why not? Won't it be cool to have something expansive where there's more time to go into the history of the TMI world?

message 108: by Emma (new)

Emma Ooh do you think there'll be references to the infernal devices? Or like flashbacks or something? I would love it.

message 109: by Tessa691 (new)

Tessa691 | 1 comments I am just so afraid that they are also gonna f*ck up the tv show. I really enjoyed the books, and it would be so sad if they ruined the amazing story

message 110: by Emma (new)

Emma True. I have the same concerns.

message 111: by Aneesha (new)

Aneesha I can not wait until the TV series comes out

Julie (julieflores) | 8 comments Well now that the 2 trailers and the first 7 minutes of the pilot were revealed what are your thoughts? Harry at the moment looks very consistent and in the character. Matthew it's so pretty and I like him as Alec. I still have my doubts with Clary, it's too i don't want to say plastic, but i can't find other word at the moment, the Clary of the tv show looks more like the Clary at the end of the 6 book. Dominic seems to be really in the character, and our Izzy at the moment seems really good.

message 114: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 3 comments Julie wrote: "Well now that the 2 trailers and the first 7 minutes of the pilot were revealed what are your thoughts?..."

I have watched those first seven minutes quite a few times now, and I have mixed opinions. I like the fact that Magnus owns pandemonium, it makes sense and will give interesting direction to the story line. However I don't like the way they have done the special effects at all, I mean the demons just become a shower of red sparks? What is with that? Also in the teaser trailer, when Jace (Dom) landed in the puddle, the splash was in the shape of a rune... Really not sure how I feel about this yet.

I think Harry seems to play Magnus' character well and I like Matt as Alec. Dominic and Emeraude also seem really in character. Alberto is also playing a really good Simon.

Julie wrote: "I still have my doubts with Clary, it's too i don't want to say plastic, but i can't find other word at the moment" - I agree, and I can't think of a better word either.

Additional note: I don't like that they have changed it so that Luke is a policeman.

message 116: by Sana (new)

Sana Zameer (sanazameer) I hope they don't screw this the way City of Bones movie was done. It was a huge let down for me.

message 117: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments I've only listened to the first two audiobooks so I guess I'm just some Mortal Instruments amateur here, but I don't understand why the movie was bad. Maybe I can get an explanation? It followed the book well enough to me...
As for the tv show, the casting looks awful. The girl playing Clary looks the way I expect her to look from the book, but I think Lily Collins nailed it personality wise in the movie (despite the terrible hair and eyebrows.) She even sounds like the girl who narratedthe audiobook. Everyone else on the show looks off to me. Why are Isabelle and Alec Spanish now? lol

message 118: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments I think most TV shows based on books are actually much better than the books, while the movie versions tend to disappoint. I mean look at Vampire Diaries. Amazing TV show based off the most childish and annoying book and it's completely different, same as The Secret Circle, True Blood, etc. Maybe this cast will do well. I didn't like the movie cast myself (other than Lily) so who knows. I am very excited that "the other Asian" from Glee will be playing Magnus though!!!

Lauraeimre | 49 comments I don't really like the actress for Clary. But hey, maybe I'm going to change my mind :)
Only 3 more days and we will see how good the series will be

Michael (michjarv98) | 14 comments YESSSSS SO HYPE
So, idk what my judgement might be about the show because it just seems to me that the trailers and snippets aren't doing much for i Can't wait to actually watch the show and then really get the full feel for the show as whole

message 121: by Mykaila (new)

Mykaila | 3 comments I agree. Kat is a really good actress I just can't see her as Clary. And I don't like the Max that much either.

message 122: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments Anybody get around to watching this last night? I caught most of it while doing laundry and I was thinking what the hell book did they read???

message 123: by Nikki (last edited Jan 13, 2016 05:36PM) (new)

Nikki Sojkowski (nikkisoj) | 868 comments I really liked these books so I watched the first two episodes and I really shouldn't have. Disappointing and a waste of time.

message 124: by Taylor (new)

Taylor I know that the books were for young adults, but I still feel like they made the series so dumbed down. The world and characters weren't this annoying in the books and I doubt Magnus looked like a cross between Chris Angel and Adam lambert so I was hoping for a little more with the overall look and feel of the show. But this was just the pilot...maybe it will get better *crosses fingers*

message 125: by Manveer (new)

Manveer (manveerssj4) Shadowhunters is another failed attempt at adapting the books for screen. Even the movie was tons better than the TV pilot. And the cast is just bad. Lily Collins was actually decent.
I am NOT going to watch any more episodes, no.

message 126: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments From what I read, the show was supposed to "fix the mistakes" the movie made in the first few episodes and then continue on into the later books. But the pilot was actually far more different from the book than the movie. I thought the movie had enough changes to make it interesting without changing too much. I didn't like the foreshadowing (about the blood draining) or making them older since naivety is one of Clary's biggest flaws. I like that Luke is a cop, to a degree, but the book claims he owns a book store because it is such a low profile job, which a police officer is certainly not. But it does make it easier to cover up all the supernatural crimes I suppose. I'll give it a few more episodes before I call it quits though.

message 127: by Amber (new)

Amber (bookvampirewub) | 9 comments The show is already closer to the books.

message 128: by Camille ☼ (last edited Jan 14, 2016 01:23AM) (new)

Camille ☼ The show is definitely better than the movie for me, but still a bit disappointing though. I'll wait to see more episodes but, it was so rushed, as if they were trying to give as much information as they could in one episode. There were unecessary scenes that could have been cut off in order to have more context or to learn more about the characters. The flashbacks were placed at weird moments. Why tell us right away who is Valentine and what he wants? Why make so many scenes with Clary's mom, giving away everything about her right away? I feel like I understood everything because I've read the book, but someone who had not read them must have felt really confused. I also have a hard time with Magnus cast, and the acting of some actors is a bit off. And... Chernobyl??

Apart from that there was good changes, like Dorita's character or Luke being a cop (even though it does contradict with his character in the book, it is still pretty cool). Alec and Isabelle were much better in the TV show than the movie. Simon was great too.

message 131: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments The show becomes more different from the books with each episode to me. But I will say it has definitely improved from episode one and I no longer want to quit watching. I like Simon's character, too, but after watching the UK show Misfits I developed a huge crush on Robert Sheehan (who played Simon in the City of Bones movie). I want Robert back now!

message 132: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (ebooklivv) Ricky wrote: "I've seen a few people say Molly Quinn should be Clary. Surprisingly, I agree. It'll give her something to do since she gets so little screentime on Castle these days..."

I wish Molly was casted! She would have done so much better. Kat is doing horribly, but that can also be due to terrible writing. I don't know, she just whines and cries way to much to be Clary for me.

message 133: by Clary (new)

Clary | 3 comments So, I started the show all excited, but gave up after three episodes. The lead actress was just horrible in my opinion and they changed so many random things which really didn't need to be changed. It didn't help the plot, didn't make any sense, just annoyed me... Anyhow, now that the first season is over I wanted to ask you how you liked it. Did the acting improve? Do they manage to stay true to the book or at least change it in an interesting way? I really want to give it another shot (only because I love the books so much), but I'm not sure if it's worth the time. Thanks for your input :)

message 134: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments The acting didn't improve but the plot did. It was a short season, too, so if you don't like it you won't be wasting a whole lot of time. After a while I just pretended like it was a different story, just as I did with True Blood, so I could appreciate them both separately. It's not the best but it was okay. Better than Pretty Little Liars has been lately at least!

message 135: by Clary (new)

Clary | 3 comments Thank you, I'll give it another shot then. I actually liked PLL these last few episodes - the time jump was a good idea

message 136: by Lvzer1 (new)

Lvzer1 | 4 comments once you get over how 'not' small and fierce Clary is, it gets better. M. Bane is a delightful character along with Simon. Truly brings back the spirits of the books :) try again.

message 137: by Clary (new)

Clary | 3 comments thanks, I think I will :) You are soo right - Clary not being small was one of the main reasons I disliked the show :D That scene where they all got dressed up for the party and Clary was supposed to wear one of Isabelles T-shirts but was cmpletely dolled up in that dress........ but I'll just try to overlack that and enjoy the rest^^

message 138: by Amber (new)

Amber (emberlemps) | 41 comments I'm not happy with Clary and Jace in the show. But for me Malec makes up for that. I'm also very happy with both Izzy and Simon. I know the characters and storyline don't really follow the books. And the acting is still pretty bad. But for me, I'm just really happy to be in the Shadow World again. I'm looking forward to the next season, to see what they get up to there. Who knows, maybe it'll improve. If not, I'll just keep the books and show seperate, so I can enjoy both of them.

message 139: by Aisya Raisya (new)

Aisya Raisya (aisyaraisya) | 63 comments the actor and actress who'd play as jace and clary are lack acting skill. the girl is to flirty and the other one is too stiff (IDK I producer want to make him to be cool and failed)
But the rest are fine for me

its surprise me since I LOVE JACE SO Much in the book but fall way more to Alec in the series!

message 140: by Aisya Raisya (new)

Aisya Raisya (aisyaraisya) | 63 comments * IDK i think

message 141: by Amber (new)

Amber (emberlemps) | 41 comments Okay so I'm rewatching the TV show and I just really need to complain about the fact how an awful friend Clary is to Simon. Simon is nothing but loyal and sweet. And ever since Jace has come around she's just basically full on ignoring Simon. Everything awful that happens to him is her fault. She does not deserve Simon.

message 142: by Rells (new)

Rells (gingerwolfie) Tis shows just drives me insane! i stopped watching it after season 1 episode 4 or something. I couldn't deal with it the characters were just... NO! like clary- I'm sorry her hair is curlY not curlED (yes theres a difference). Then jace... what is this hair that i see? he is supposed to have perfect, wavy hair, but NOOOOO, he has like a flop and then buzz-cut! and he is supposed to be WAYY taller. Izzy.... she's not a slut, she has a sense of fashion- so why is she going outside in just glittery-sxortsbras? and i clearly remember that on that first night in the pandemonium club she was wearing a LONG white dress!!!!! and her acting... :|....simon.... well he's OKKK, not my favorite. Alec is perfecto! Magnus.... i ike the looks but the acting! oh dear G-d the acting! then clay's mom- jocelyn- her hair is purple not red! not to mention valentine! where did his broad chest, height, white-blond hair go? i mean come on!!!!
ok I'm done with my rant :)

message 143: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Sojkowski (nikkisoj) | 868 comments The acting isn't great in this show and I particularly didn't like the actors for Jace and Clary as these characters (they seem really cool in their interviews but Clary is just cringe-worthy). I ended up watching the whole season purely for Malec scenes (i love the books) and it was 100% worth putting up with the rest of this mediocre show.

message 144: by E. C. (new)

E. C. Ecchor (ecmcroy) I think there's a lot of hating on the acting (which, okay, could be significantly better - Clary I'm looking at you), but i think overall, they did pretty ok considering that this is a TV show not a movie. And besides, Clary is annoying in the books, too, so it doesn't bug all that much. And Jace? I love him. So much better than the movie Jace (maybe because he's less of a jerk? which is ooc yes, but less obnoxious). Malec is amazing and i just want to say that I loved Izzy in this. I don't think dressing in revealing clothing makes her a slut (kind of rude to throw that out there actually) but self possessed. she's comfortable with her oen body as she should be. And i liked how the storyline is it's own instead of trying to follow the books exactly only to make everyone mad for failing. I will definitely give season two a shot

message 145: by Braelyn (new)

Braelyn | 53 comments I loved all of the show except jace and clary. Clary is just annoying and I didn't think the acting was very good. Jace is kind of annoying to me at least. I felt that their relationship was rushed too quickly. I absolutely adore everyone else and yes some of the acting is not very good at times but overall it's a good show. When I heard the king from Reign was going to play Valentine I was like "Oh My Yes." He plays such a good villain.

message 146: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Cozzi (jessycozzi) This tv series it's so trash, but I like it! haha
I love Malec, they are so perfect and there's a good connection between the actors.. I don't like Clary and Jace instead, they are a little boring

message 147: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh (booksbyash) | 59 comments I really didn't like Clary that much, even Magnus was a bit eh for me. But I'm still going to watch because I love TMI too much even if the TV version is bad. I'm hoping that it will improve because if I look back at some of the shows I watch that are good now, the acting in the early stages was pretty bad

message 148: by Lucy (new)

Lucy (lamaggs) | 5 comments Am I the only one that dislikes Alec in the TV show? A lot of the time he seems so monotone, and not in the way I was expecting him to be like from the books. He doesn't seem to have much of an emotional range so I'm really struggling with Malec: how can I care if I don't think one of the characters in the relationship really cares either? Just my thoughts.

message 149: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments Lucy wrote: "Am I the only one that dislikes Alec in the TV show? A lot of the time he seems so monotone, and not in the way I was expecting him to be like from the books. He doesn't seem to have much of an emo..."

I like the look of Alec, it's kind of how I pictured him when reading the book, but the actor is a robot. He really doesn't have any emotion at all. Then again, Alec was kind of like that in the books, too. He was my least favorite character. Sadly, the actor is like the cutest one on the show, so they can keep him around for now =P

And as far as Magnus goes, I like Harry Shum Jr. from Glee, but I am not sure this role is right for him. I think he is a good actor, but it just seems like he really has to push himself to act so flamboyantly. I do think he improved as the show went on.

I still hate Clary and Jace. He looks waaaay too old, and although she looks the part, that girl can't act at all. But that's ABC family, no one on there can really act. I'll keep watching like I do with PLL despite how disappointing it's been, of course, because I feel like it can't get much worse and has to keep improving.

I agree with your points on everyone, and yes Alec is ridiculously cute but I just want a but of umph with him. Book Alec was moody but at least he got stroppy and aggressive, which the show isn't really exploring that much.

Harry Shum Jr. is a good actor, I think it's the portrayal of magnus itself that I have to get over. He's not as strong as he is in the books but that is something that is just different on the show and works fine anyway. He's definitely improved in his role.

URGH CLARY! Is it the script, the awkward moments with Jace or the actress herself that makes me cringe every time she opens her mouth?! After getting over the fact that she isn't short, which is fine, I ended up questioning her acting abilities, which isn't very promising for a show I really want to be a success.

I'm not hating on the actors because things are improving each episode and it has started to get a flow going. However, like you said, it has been quite disappointing.
