I wanted to share my debut novel with everyone. If you like re-tellings, this one's a doozy!

Ruby Emam (goodreadscomruby_emam) | 93 comments I just finished reading Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. This is the fourth time in the course of several years that I have read this amazing masterpiece. The society is in turmoil, economy has collapsed, chronic poverty, lack of freedom and justice have reached their pinnacle, the revolution is inevitable.

The goals of The French Revolution, after all the bloodshed and sacrifices, had unfortunately not been achieved and as corruption, police brutality, imprisonments, hunger and poverty drew the people of Paris into deeper misery, the moment for this amazing Revolution (The Paris Commune) had arrived.

Parisians, led by student intellectuals, built barricades in large areas of Paris, and fought for the goals of JUSTICE, EQUALITY and FREEDOM (slightly different from "Justice, Equality and Fraternity", which was the motto of the French Revolution).

The Revolution temporarily was a success and the area became the new Government Headquarters for two (2) months, but it collapsed.

Few references have ever been made to this Revolution in the literature and history of that era, however Victor Hugo has glorified it in "Les Miserables".

The Broadway musical played on stage and the same musical in the form of a movie depict this Revolution very well.

If anyone is interested to discuss this book, I am willing to participate.
