This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments I think I got all of the Jodi Picoult that were outstanding.

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments This English Patient should be combined with another one of the Vintage Canada copies (for instance this one, then should be deleted.

This Kafka on the Shore and this one too should be deleted.

This The Omnivore's Dilemma and this one and this one

This one needs to be combined with another audio CD: CD. Then should be deleted.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Oh, By the way, I had done those versions of My Sister's Keeper but that book still needs some cleaning up.

message 54: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I'm working on The Omnivore's Dilemma.

When an edition to be deleted doesn't indicate whether paperback or hardcover, I'm just combining in general, even if the date(s) seem to indicate paperback vs. hardcover, for instance. There's really no identifying information to be sure which edition was meant to be added. I figure if readers find they have the wrong edition (they already had an "incorrect" edition) they can go in and switch editions.

Is doing it this way ok?

message 55: by Lisa (last edited Apr 18, 2008 08:08AM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Yikes!!! I was in the middle of cleaning up Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma and now when do a search for the book, no books show. I don't have that problem with other books. I, at first, was able to go into my history and get to the book/editions, but now cannot. I'm sure (as I can be) that I didn't do anything wrong. Ugh.

Can other librarians find this book? I'm about to post in Goodreads Feedback under bugs - after I troubleshoot a bit more.

Edit: I can find the book/all editions when I go into my librarian edits. Going to stop cleaning up for now/nearly done anyway.

message 56: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym) | 145 comments Water for Elephants - p.s. how this random edition got 42 reviews in 2 days is beyond me.
Water for Elephants
Blue Shoes and Happiness - duplicate ISBN
Number One Ladies...
Number one ladies... - this one has a review - how do we usually approach these? Should I contact the reviewer and ask them to transfer the review over, or is there a way for librarians and/or superlibrarians to do that?

message 57: by Melody (last edited Apr 18, 2008 10:30AM) (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments Lisa - I can find that book. Probably just a caching issue: here

message 58: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Melody,

I see it there too but when I put it in the search engine myself I get

howing 1-3 of 3 results for 'the omnivore's dilemma michael pollan' (Goodreads search in 0.08s)
The Omnivore's Dilemma
by Michael Pollan
avg rating -0.00 — -1 ratings — published 2008

which just shows one edition no cover.

??????

Thanks though. Not a caching issue on my end; it's some other glitch.

message 59: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (havan) | 330 comments Not Sure how to handle this one... I have a copy of The Great Gatsby. Its published by Charles Scribner's Sons sometime in or after 1953 but of course there's no ISBN. There are already a NUMBER of editions listed that have very little information and no covers shown. I can scan in the cover and ADD it to one of the other editions along with publisher and other identifying information or I can set up yet another edition. What's the BEST way to handle this?

message 60: by Melody (last edited Apr 18, 2008 11:30AM) (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments This Emma should be deleted and then this Emma should be added back in with the other Emmas.

Stephen, I know you should definitely not alter any of the editions with ISBN numbers. If your edition is not listed you can manually add it. Just enter as much information (publisher, cover etc) as you can since it does not have an ISBN number - so we don't come behind you and delete it :-). And make sure your review is NOT the description of the book. Your review should be done on your profile page.

message 61: by Melody (last edited Apr 18, 2008 11:41AM) (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments And speaking of Great Gatsby's or "Gastby's" as in this case. Delete this one and this one too

And these should be merged (one deleted) and then put back in with the other Great Gatsby listings.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Emma and Gatsby deleted.

message 63: by Melody (last edited Apr 18, 2008 12:13PM) (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments This Gatsby needs to have one deleted and then put back with the other Gatsbys.

The Curious Incident ...

message 64: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I did The Curious Incident.

I don't feel comfortable doing Gatsby/some foreign languages even though I can see that the one does not look at all legit.

message 65: by Melody (last edited Apr 18, 2008 12:44PM) (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments I pulled them out of Gatsby - so they would combine with each other - so that's how I know that's where they belong - if that helps you feel better. That description for the one with no ISBN probably should be copied over too. (anyway - that's what I think)

This Kane & Abel to be deleted.

message 66: by Kisholi (new)

Kisholi | 9 comments This book has no ISBN, no cover and there is a misspelling in the title. There are seven reviews though...

message 67: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym) | 145 comments Another one where the most popular edition is incorrect and needs to be deleted/swapped:
The Historian

The edition with the correct info & ISBN's is this one:
The Historian

message 69: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym) | 145 comments I came across this book:

Cold Mountain (Sheet Music)

Although the title specifies sheet music (and has a different author than the novel) it seems that most of the reviews are intended for the novel. Can these be transferred by a superlibrarian or is this a job for Otis & co that I should post somewhere else?

message 70: by Lisa (last edited Apr 19, 2008 09:11PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Ashley,

Thanks for noticing that. I looked and took the chance that everyone who'd rated/reviewed it meant the book and not the sheet music.

So, I changed the author, combined it, deleted it to move over the ratings and reviews to an edition of the book, and then I manually added the sheet music with all its info back in to the system since Amazon will add it back in anyway, adding that it's not a book, etc.:

Otis, Rivka, and All, I hope that I did the right thing.

Ashley (ashleym) | 145 comments Thanks Lisa :)

message 72: by Sally (new)

Sally | 30 comments I noticed a similar thing with John Williams' sheet music of Jurrasic Park; people were obviously reviewing the book, but put it under the sheet music entry. John Williams has written a *lot* of soundtracks....

message 73: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Sallyb, I see the Jurassic Park sheet music with all of those ratings. I'd like to hear confirmation that I did the correct thing with Cold Mountain even though I'm reasonably sure that I did. Then, I (& other super librarians) can go in and fix Jurassic Park, other John Williams sheet music, etc. sheet music. If I get ambitious, I might go in and do Jurrasic Park.

In the meantime, I at least changed it to NOT A BOOK:

These copies of The Emperor's Children should be deleted: here and here

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments I think Melody is on a mission :-)

Emperor's Children completed and someone else appears to have already done Misery.

message 76: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I think Melody is on a mission :-)

If so, Melody's mission will be a lifelong one I'm afraid. ;-)

There will always be clean up needed in the database, no matter how much we do get done. It sure is satisfying to make some difference though.

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments I wish I could stop. But I'll do a search for a book I'm interested in reading and then I'll see something that just doesn't look right. And then.... well.... it's just up to the super heroes from there.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Eat, Pray, Love, Five Quarters of an Orange, Fluke, Water for Elephants, Number one ladies, Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food, Run, Bel Canto, Three Cups of Tea, all taken care of.

I'm mildly bothered, though, because I would swear I cleaned up some of these books in the last week already and it's hard to believe I could have missed that many.

message 84: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Michael, I didn't look at any of the above you mentioned in post #84 because you'd taken care of them. I'm wondering if it's possible that some are genuine editions and have been spit back out by Amazon into the GR database. Is that possible?

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments No, they're definitely not from Amazon, I actually look at who added them before I delete (since the name is right next to the delete link) and none were from Amazon. Besides, almost all missing ISBNs (I think two were duplicate ISBNs with the ISBN 13 in the ISBN 10 field).

It could be that I just missed them or that the list all editions doesn't always list all editions, but I would have sworn I had already gone through all of the editions of "Eat, Pray, Love" and "Water for Elephants" a week or two ago. And some of these were added well before that. Probably just my failing memory.

message 86: by Melody (last edited Apr 21, 2008 05:10PM) (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments Michael, if it makes you feel any better I found that eat, pray and love under a variation of the spelling of the author's name, combined it with the other editions - but then had to let you guys delete it since it had so many reviews. I can't defend your memory on the others.

Here's another to delete: Nickle and Dimed

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Melody, that actually makes me feel quite a bit better. As a reward, I deleted Nickle and Dimed.

Ashley (ashleym) | 145 comments Michael, I've found that with some of the more popular books (like the ones in my last couple postings) more and more of these blank editions are added all the time. I go back to Stephenie Meyer every couple of days and find more that need combining/deleting. Oddly enough, some of them gain a lot of ratings very quickly too, I try to catch them and merge them before that happens and I have to bug you guys by posting them here :P
Hopefully that makes you feel better about so many cropping up so soon after you cleaned them up, it could be part of the problem :)

I'm noticing the same thing. I don't think there has been a day I've logged on and NOT found a new 'blank' edition of Kite Runner, for example. And that's just by browsing the latest reviews in Explore, not by actively searching.

Here is an example of a book that just got added on 4/18/08 and already has over 40 peopl who have "reviewed" it. I combined it with the other editions - but can't delete it. Water for Elephants Please delete.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Melody, here is what drives me nuts. When I deleted the Water for Elephants books on 4/21/08 I went through the whole list looking for other editions that needed to be removed (I never solely rely on the requested deletion and usually see if I can independently find the editions that need to be removed). If that one was added on 4/18/08 I should have found and removed it. Now, I'll admit it is easy to miss some, particularly when there are lots of editions.

And 40+ reviews? I just did a search for "Water for Elephants". It had 11 results, none of which were any of the main versions of this book or even versions combined with the main versions of the book. In fact, the only basic copy of the book that came up has the author's name spelled incorrectly. Adding the author's name does not help. The search engine is failing rather dramatically (again).

Edit: You would think a book with over 22,000 ratings would be easy to find.

message 97: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I got Ashley's Anita Shreve's books.

message 98: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I did the two of four that were left of Melody's. We'll see if they/or other should be deleted editions return.

Michael, what you're describing is strange, and I've been noticing similar search problems. I think that GR is working on it.

message 99: by Melody (last edited Apr 23, 2008 08:43AM) (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments Yes - I definitely think that revising the search engine on Goodreads would solve some of the problem of new "empty" editions being added. Michael - that Water for Elephants was listed with the correct author - but not combined with the other editions. I discovered it because in my friends digest I saw that my sister had that book as a "to read" book. When I clicked it I saw it was one with no information - and was not combined with the 22,000 other reviews of that book. I was so glad to see it wasn't her who manually added the book - but she obviously, either found it because she searched for it or she picked it off the list of current reviews (I haven't asked her about it).

This just goes to show - I don't find them .... they find me. :-)

Two others to delete:
Between Sisters

The Magic Hour
