@Adam
The rest of the series is AMAZING!!! I'm a big Madeleine L'Engle fan.

I would also recommend the book the westing game if you like mystery novels
(Hi all - just a quick mod note/apology. I'm sorry to anyone who might have had a comment with text deleted. I intended to only delete a comment not contributing to the discussion, but I deleted another by mistake. Again, I'm sorry!)
As for other books, I would recommend the His Dark Materials series, which is a bit slower than Harry Potter, but has intriguing characters and a story that is easy to get lost in for hours. The Bartimaeus Trilogy would also be a fun choice, with its chapters alternating between third person and a hilarious first person narrator. Like HP, It starts with a young boy learning magic, but things end up going very differently for him!
Also, assuming you don't mind something that's not exactly YA/childrens's, I would check out The Lies of Lock Lamora by Scott Lynch. It's the start to a pretty fun, thrilling fantasy series that is unfortunately not yet finished, but I think the first book is good enough to stand alone.

You should try out the Lorien legacies. They r amazing. A lot of good plot twist as well.
