Dang, I guess I can't use it for the Odd Man Out task. But at least I know I can fit it in somewhere.

Alicia | 6 comments I'm new here, so this may be a dumb question, but for task:
20.1 MOST IMPROVED PLAYER - BETH MN'S TASK - REVISITING THE PAST

It says "To See A List Of Former Tasks See The Help Thread For This Task" but I have no idea where to go to do this. I don't know where the list/help thread is. Please help. :S

For the World of Disney task, can you accept Simon's cat by Simon Tofield? It's a 240 pages cartoon book. My favourite Disney is The Aristocats?
Thanks.

Deedee | 2344 comments Hi all -- a question on the "big" books -- alot of the larger books have different page counts depending on the edition. Which edition's page count should be used to determine whether or not a book is 500+ or 750+ or 1000+ pages?

It's whatever edition you read so people need to post the page numbers and/or link to the edition they read.

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments Sarah wrote: "When is the mid date (the day that the 50 point challenge will be announced)?"

January 14th the winner will be announced (unless someone finishes the challenge prior to that date).

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments The winner? I thought it went until February 28th.

You would need to ask Donna Jo but I'm pretty sure you would need to read another book with either northern or lights in the title.

Cynthia is right. You will need to pick another book with northern or lights (or some variation of either) in the title.

Hello, a question about task 15.2 ADVENTURES WITH ALICE AND LEWIS -
A. Read A Book Written By An Author With The Name Alice/Lewis (First Or Last). AND B. Read A Novel That Takes Place In A Fictional Land Such As Narnia Or Oz.
I'm clear about 15.2.A. I'll use a book by Alice Munro. But can I use The Last Elf, by for task 15.2.B? The story in the Last Elf takes place near and in a city named Daligar. Also it is a YA.

message 322: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments I'm cross-posting from a few task threads because I don't think they get checked very often.

For 15.1 (Make Me Laugh), would either "Bride Wars" or "Defending Your Life" work for the movie section? What about Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman for the book?

For 10.10 (From Russia with Love): Nophoto-f-25x33 Would Paullina Simons count as a Russian author? She is originally from Russia but now lives in the US (and has for many years). http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/474... I'm specifically considering one of her books that does NOT take place in Russia (several of them do, so I know those would count anyway). Lily

For 10.10 (Louis Louis), would Love Is Blind by Lynsay Sands work? This isn't my question, and there is a better description in that thread, but this looks great and I'd love to use it!

For 15.2 (Adventures with Alice and Lewis), somewhere I picked up the idea that I could use Disney After Dark by Ridley Pearson for the 2nd part of this task. So I got it from the library. But after reading the back, I wanted to double-check! It appears that part takes place at Disney World and part in some alternate reality DW?!?

Thanks!!

Sorry none of those work for 15.1, 10.10 - If the author was born in Russia it counts, 10.2 - Love is Blind - I'll take it, From the description of Disney After Dark it doesn't fit the task - no alternate worlds.

message 328: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments I just got a Goodreads "first read" book in the mail (hooray!) and was excited to see that I *think* it qualifies for a task I still hadn't filled. I got Government Girl: Young and Female in the White House by Stacy Parker Aab. I believe she is African-American and is both writer and main character, so I am hoping it fits 10.3 (African-American writer and protagonist). The book is non-fiction, though, so I'm not sure it qualifies? It is about her experiences working in the Clinton White House.

Thanks!

message 329: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments P.S. Sorry to be such a pain!! I think I am just going to squeak in under the wire with finishing and I'm reaching the harder-to-fill tasks now. I don't want to get it wrong and then miss finishing (which I know isn't really point, finishing, but I think it would be fun).

For non-fiction it has to be about a person from the Harlem Renaissance period so no. The first option is fiction only.

scherzo♫ (pjreads) For 10.3 Renaissance Reading, is this okay?
A Renaissance in Harlem: Lost Essays of the WPA, by Ralph Ellison, Dorothy West, and Other Voices of a Generation

"Lost for generations in the vaults of The Library of Congress, these remarkable essays by some of the era's finest writers, including Dorothy West and Ralph Ellison, vividly evoke daily life during the Harlem Renaissance."

message 337: by Arow (new)

Arow For the midpoint task- does the novel have to be about the winter sport or can the winter sport just be in the title? Skeleton is a sport in the winter Olympics so I am wondering if I can read a book with Skeleton in the title. Thank you!

message 338: by Arow (new)

Arow Please ignore my question- I realized that there was another thread in which someone asked the same question as me. I will read that thread for an answer. Thanks!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Do we have to read the entire book for it to count? I haven't come across this problem yet but just speaking. What if you are almost through the book but the book is so boring you can no longer stand it? Can you still count it or do you have to start another book for the task?

message 340: by Manday (new)

Manday | 307 comments Sarah - I dont know what the technical rule is, but in the past I have had two books I flat out refused to finish, so I did not use them for the challenge. I don't think partially read books should count.

You DO have to complete books to have them count, even if you're past the 100 page mark. I had one I COULD NOT finish, so I picked something else. Sounds like you're almost done though... maybe read something else, then come back and finish this one?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Like I said, I have never had this happen to me!!! I was just wondering!!!

message 343: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Yeah, I'm the same way. There are only 2 or 3 books I've ever NOT finished... But yeah, kinda sucks...

message 344: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments On that topic, I assume that we also have to read all of books like "I am Legend" where the actually "IAL" story is over 100 pages, but only about half of the total book (rest is short stories).

I believe so, unless you can find a copy of I am Legend by itself... (no idea if that exists...)

yes

message 347: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments OK, good to know. It was no problem with either of the Richard Matheson books I used for this challenge, but I was thinking about it for future tasks. Sometimes there are anthologies where I only like one or two of the authors.

Thanks!

message 348: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2344 comments what if .... you're 2/3rds of the way through a book at the end of a challenge. which challenge does it count for? the one just ending? or the one just beginning?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments I would say the one just ending.

message 350: by Cynthia (new)

Neither - as being not finished it can't count for the one ending and as being more than half finished it doesn't count for the one just beginning. The rule is that no more than half of a book can be read prior to the beginning of a challenge.
