RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, let me make sure I understand this story I heard on NPR today. A guy wants a memorial in a Connecticut town for his son, killed in 9/11, but he wants the memorial to include the phrase "murdered by Muslim Terrorists". What do you think?

I don't agree with the father. Sure, Muslim terrorists were involved. That's the truth (um, except to the people who think 9/11 was a larger conspiracy, I guess). But the memorial is not, in my eyes, supposed to be hateful and incendiary; in fact, I don't think the phrase is associated with a memorial to his son at all. And I can't think of any other memorials including the religion of the criminals. I guess the closest analogy is Nazis and the Holocaust.

What do you think?

I think that the fathers idea is a bad one, and that he should have a more positive message for/about his son on the memorial.

Her Majesty (hermajesty) | 122 comments well, to be honest the word "terrorist" automaticly translates to "Muslims" pretty sure I'm not the only one, it is what it is.

but "murdered by Muslim Terrorists" is abit offensive.

Fortunately, most of us will never know what this father is going through, so it's difficult to judge. I do think, however, that he would come to regret it, if he put something like that on the memorial. It seems like the memorial should be more about his son's life and accomplishments.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments It sounds like the father is still working through his anger... understandable - his son died in a horrific event. I couldn't even begin to understand his loss.

I think the phrase "murdered by Muslim terrorists" is completely inappropriate, though. It doesn't even come close to honoring the memory of his son or any of the other people who died that day.

Angie (angabel) Definitely offensive, I think. For me, personally, I'd rather a memorial celebrate the life of someone, and not just how they died. The founder of the college I taught at was murdered in his sleep but they won't talk about that, because they'd rather reflect on the great things he did up until that point, making his life more important than the manner in which he died. For a terrorist victim, this is a tough situation, because it is incredibly important to remember how and why they died, but on a specific memorial? Celebrating someone's life is better, I think.

I agree with Bun, as well.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i cannot image living life with such bitterness and anger toward an entire religious group. i also cannot imagine what this father is going through. i am heartsick for his loss and for his misplaced intentions on what would make him feel better. for me, this would be a constant reminder of something evil instead of a remembrance of a loved one

David (bowsertheturtle) i agree terrorist ≠ Muslim ... there's many different kinds of people.. more then one form of terrorism and more then one kind of Muslim.. and i agree the phrase is going a bit too far..

Books Ring Mah Bell ((((Bun Wat))))

Thank you for message 6. I have a very close friend who is Muslim and seeing him be equated with terrorist makes my blood boil.

How about "killed by religious nutjobs"?
