I read this book as a kid; I think it is from the 80's, but could be wrong. I cannot remember the details too clearly, but just have a vague idea of the story. Here is what I remember: The girl lives on a farm, probably lonely, and meets a unicorn. I think the unicorn was injured and needed her help, I'm pretty sure the unicorn could talk, and it might have had wings. She hides it in the barn, and at some point I think she had to tell her mother about it (or maybe it was an older sibling?). At the end I think the unicorn left to go back to his home, or maybe it left because it got too dangerous to stay and too difficult to keep him hidden.
Yes, that's it! Thanks M. I thought the title you posted sounded familiar, and then when I read the synopsis the details all came back, even the ones I remembered wrong (it was her father, not her mother, that helped out--oops).
